For once it wasn’t a pro-Islam thought for the day. No, it was pro-Socialist and anti-Conservative. You can’t say the BBC does not offer variety. 

Thought for the Day is usually a political exercise, not a moral or religious one. The other morning the BBC gave Anne Atkins the chance to argue for the Burqa in the UK (yes, no kidding) and today we had John Bell of the Iona community on to advance the latest Stonewall agenda item that the media is too harsh on how it portrays gays. TFTD is simply politics by other means and it is remarkable how few real voices of dissent get the chance to ever express an opinion on it. Why not replace with with a 3 minute silence, it would be more constructive?

I know I go on about Thought for the Day but it really is like the five minute hate. Take this morning. Rev Joel Edwards popped up to tell us all about the wonders of Obama ( “400% increase in death threats than George W Bush”, he repeated) and suggested that perhaps Jimmy Carter was right that those who opposed The One are indeed racists. Edwards is entitled to his opinions, of course, but isn’t it surprising how frequently the content of TFTD dovetails into the broader BBC narrative?

Another Thought for the Day from a Muslim cleric, this time Abdal Hakim Murad – Muslim Chaplain at the University of Cambridge. Abdal is very concerned about how people treat all those poor “asylum seekers” that the French cleared out of the jungle yesterday, even razing their temporary Mosque he adds. Indeed he went on to suggest that we have a duty to show “charity” towards such people by inviting them into the UK before adding that Islam itself is all about showing goodwill and charity. Mmmm.
