For some reason BBC R4 decided we needed a lecture on our ‘literary xenophobia’, our racist refusal to read books from other nations.
Yet another ‘dangerous’, divisive and dishonest lie about race and the xenophobic Whiteys being given too much airtime by the BBC.
They wheeled in Ann Morgan to berate and upbraid us…she having spent a year reading books from ‘other nations’ as a project of self-education and enlightenment brought about by her self-induced guilt at hardly ever having read a book that wasn’t written by a Brit or Yank.
‘ I used to stick mostly to British and North American writers, with the occasional South African, Australian and Indian thrown in. My knowledge of world literature was shamefully anglocentric.’
Essentially we are all being labelled as xenophobes purely because she herself hasn’t read very widely and rather than accept it as purely a personal ‘failing’, if it is, she makes it into an ‘issue’ she can, of course, sell and market…which she does remarkably well as she gathers in all the building blocks of what goes into bringing a book onto the bookshelves and builds them into a towering conflation of outrage….apparently hardly any books are published or read by non-anglophone authors or readers due to that ‘literary xenophobia’. Trouble is like any such exercise where all the ‘correct’ blocks are rounded up and then stuck together what you get is never the real or most effective thing ….just look at the US Army’s astonishingly bad UCP light grey camouflage uniform…now consigned to history….all the ‘right’ colours for the perfect camouflage according to the technology and the science….and yet it ddn’t work in the real world….just like her thesis.
Hmmmm…astonishing she hasn’t read any Russian classics….of course nobody has have they? Russian fussian….foreign rubbish! Her project itself kind of belies her own theory…that there are no books out there by foreign authors….how can you spend a year reading books that don’t exist?
And nobody reads them? Er…how is so many books by Bames get to the top of reading lists and win so many literary prizes….she obviously doesn’t notice as she proclaims that such people are under-represented on bookshelves and by those literary prizes.
Just check out Amazon….enter ‘African’ or ‘Japanese’ or Chinese or even ‘Papua New Guinea’ Authors and see what pops up and if anyone reads them. She could have saved herself a lot of trouble just doing that….though you suspect that rather than an exercise of personal enlightenment and ‘literary tourism’ it was from the start a sort of Guardianistic project to create yet another stick to beat Whitey with and invent yet another example of the oppression and rejection, ‘othering’ and marginalisation, of Bames by the White Imperialist Patriarchy.
The literary industry needs to be decolonised……we need less like Benjamin Zephania, Zadie Smith, Afua Hirsch, Onjali Rauf, Ibtihaj Muhammad, S. K. Ali , David Olusoga, Reni Eddo-Lodge, Nikesh Shukla, Abi Daré, Hanif Kureishi or Salman Rushdie….oh…maybe not that islamophobe…more of which later.

I wonder how many pages the, ‘Companion’ runs too………..
320 pages….there’s a lot more bame authors and artists out there than the BBC imagines….the BBC reality is totally at odds with, erm, reality….what they tell you about certain subjects bares no relation to the lived experience…such as no blacks in the country due to racist blockades keeping them in their urban ghettoes….plenty around where I live….they are not living in fear, not running the gauntlet every time they walk down the street, not hating Churchill or tearing down statues…..as far as I can tell they’re happy and successful….and that’s in a very white rural area and small town.
Reference our Whitey ‘literary xenophobia’ and the racist oppression that Bames suffer in a nasty and racist Britain…..
Compare and contrast.

Compare and contrast her life here with what she writes about back ‘home’….and then tell me about all that racist oppression and hate that fester in colonial, white, British hearts….how she has suffered here!

And a piece in the telegraph describing how ‘lefty luvvies ‘ can say bad things without punishment ( margolys / brand ‘ west et al ) whilst some of the Right has their career destroyed via a couple of sane comments ) .
Comments noted how the luvvie world is falling apart as covid continues to bite and even the big outfits such as Netflix is discovering that there are consequences to going ‘woke ‘…..

Rather astonished, not, that the BBC gets so worked up about a standard phrase that gets uttered on such occasions by so many people….read any obituary and the unfortunate person was a ‘fighter’ or a ‘battler’….when the BBC’s own Rachel Bland died from cancer she was ‘courageous’, ‘such a strong woman’, ‘inspirational’, ‘truly heroic’…and when Labour politician Tom Watson said Rachael’s family should “take great pride in the amazing courage she showed”…..where was Emily Maitlis with outraged denouncements of his ‘unhelpful and misleading language and tone’? Guess it’s only Tory politicians she has a problem with.
The only thing unhelpful and misleading is Maitlis on Newsnight.
You can also expect such inane comments that they attribute to the stabbing bruvverhood, like “He loved to play football’, or ‘his mates used to meet up wiv him every Saturday, and he was the life and soul etc etc’…
