Funny how, as with Corbyn, others can see all too clearly the truth about some people whilst the BBC sees nothing to worry about…for instance take The Spectator’s gimlet-eyed view of Alan Duncan….read it and ask yourself why the BBC’s Norman Smith was telling us this morning that the resignation, and others for the same anti-Brexit/Boris reasons, were principled stands and we should really applaud politicians who stand on their principles….how is it The Spectator can bring us the real background and motivations whilst the BBC applauds a ‘man of principle’?….
‘Sir Alan Duncan became the first minister to resign from the government today, ahead of Boris Johnson’s likely promotion to become the next prime minister. In a letter to Theresa May handing in his resignation, Duncan said that he had left government before the expected change on Wednesday so he could be ‘free to express my views in advance of you relinquishing office.’
But while Sir Alan would no doubt like to present his departure as a ‘principled’ refusal to serve in a Johnson administration, Mr S has to wonder if that’s really credible, considering the Foreign Office minister’s own various positions on Brexit (and Boris) in the past.
Here are a selection of Duncan’s highlights:
Leaving Vote Leave
In 2016 it was reported that Duncan had lobbied Matthew Elliott, the chief executive of Vote Leave, to join the board of the organisation ahead of the Brexit referendum.
When he was snubbed, Duncan decided instead to campaign for Remain, and went on to accuse his pro-Brexit colleagues of offering a ‘fanciful pretence’.
Throwing a tantrum
If Sir Alan wasn’t a fan of Vote Leave, he almost certainly doesn’t hold Brexit voters in high regard either. In 2017 at a speech in Chicago, the minister said Brexit was about the British working class throwing a ‘tantrum’ about immigration in the referendum, and the English were complaining about Europeans taking jobs they refused to do themselves.
Clearly a graceful loser, in the same speech Duncan also argued there should have been a super-majority required for Leave to win the referendum in 2016, as there had been in previous devolution referendums in the UK.
Extreme language:
In 2018, readers may remember that Alan Duncan took particular offence when Boris Johnson compared Theresa May’s Brexit negotiating position to wearing a suicide vest. After the incident, Duncan thundered online that:
‘For Boris to say that the PM’s view is like that of a suicide bomber is too much. This marks one of the most disgusting moments in modern British politics. I’m sorry, but this is the political end of Boris Johnson. If it isn’t now, I will make sure it is later. #neverfittogovern’
But Sir Alan hasn’t always been this careful about language. In 2005, he even compared the members of his own party to the Taliban in a Guardian column.
Slim pickings:
Perhaps the reason Duncan waited until now to resign from government is that he was loathe to give up his ministerial salary.
In the aftermath of the MPs’ expenses scandal in 2009, when Duncan was roundly criticised for claiming thousands of pounds from the taxpayer to spend on his garden, the MP complained that no one would want to stand for parliament any more, as: ‘Basically, it’s being nationalised, you have to live on rations and are treated like ****.’
Dire straits:
Meanwhile, Duncan leaves his position as second of command in the Foreign Office while there is a state of crisis underway in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran hijacked a British tanker. In two days the Secretary of State of the department, Jeremy Hunt, may lose his job, so you might think it helpful to have ministers stick around as Britain clashes with Iran. Duncan clearly has other things on his mind though.
So is Sir Alan really resigning for the good of the country? Mr S isn’t convinced…’
I’m convinced the likes of Mr Duncan plan to join with other remainers in Parliament to overthrow Boris and form a government without the inconvenience of an election. They will then revoke Article 50.
The fact that most of them will have stood on a manifesto of respecting the referendum result will not worry them one jot. One only has to look at your average FBPE Twitter posting to see the mental gymnastics they will perform to convince themselves it’s what people really voted for. They will attempt to convince us that it’s all in our best interests.
Should I be proved right, I hope the Brexit Party will at every turn make it quite clear that any laws or treaties entered into by this Illegitimate Parliament will be nullified by them if they win the next election.

‘The BBC has watered down some protections for religious ideas but retained a clause placing a premium on depictions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in new editorial guidelines.
The corporation has removed a requirement that content “likely to cause offence” to religious people should be referred to a senior editorial figure following National Secular Society lobbying.
The BBC has also removed a requirement to avoid “derogatory treatment” of “religions” unless it is “justified by the context”. The NSS criticised the requirement on the basis that it treated religions as equivalent to people or groups of people.
But a requirement to “have strong editorial justification” for depicting Muhammad, and to refer any depictions to “a senior editorial figure”, has been retained in full. The NSS argued that the requirement placed “a particular taboo” on such depictions.
The guidelines also include a new line saying blasphemy laws around the world “can be very different” from those in the UK and content producers “may seek advice” on them from the BBC’s legal team. The NSS has asked the BBC to explain its rationale for including this line and how it will be interpreted.
NSS spokesperson Chris Sloggett said the BBC had made “a couple of small steps in the right direction”.
“The BBC has questioned how carefully it needs to tread around religion and made some minor alterations which will help to prevent unnecessary bureaucracy from hindering free expression.
“But its approach is still too deferential to religion in several places. It’s particularly disappointing that such a premium is placed on depictions of Muhammad. The national broadcaster shouldn’t be treating religion as a special case or helping to uphold blasphemy taboos.
“The new line on blasphemy laws around the world is puzzling and open to some alarming interpretations, so we’ve written to the BBC again to ask for clarification.”
Elsewhere a requirement not to cause “unnecessary offence” to “vulnerable groups” has been replaced by a requirement to avoid causing “unjustifiable offence”.’

The BBC has given Gary Lineker the ‘green light’ to express his Sports expertise influence to his ‘remain’ followers on Twitter! The BBC has recently even changed its ‘Editorial guidelines’ (link here last week) to ensure there is no possibility of the BBC being directly tarnished with any poltical ‘bias’ as its not ‘part of the BBC’ directly. Lineker has ‘right stuff’ Loads of money and CRISPS!. Now he is being made an ambassador for the BBC at Oxford. Lineker has a deserved reputation as being a bit ‘thick’ on anything other than footie. So why has he been chosen to be a visiting ‘fellow’ at Oxford (University)?. I would like to say through academic Merit, but I shall leave that up to you to decide as I don’t watch football, at all.
But Lady Margarat Hall does, great fan of academic re-education! (she is no relation to the great Lord Hall or Benkinhnob we may be surprised to hear) but she was once the former editor of The Guardian! no less. The BBC, of course is still the biggest single client in the country The biggest single purchaser of that paper in the UK (they don’t sell many copies anywhere else). Saw today in the Daily Mail that the new judge replacing Darcy Bussell as the judge on Strictly is Oti Mbussii’s sister. We haven’t been told her dance qualifications but she fits the profile the BBC would think they needed.

Why might the BBC not want you to know about this? Could it be that a no-deal would be so catastrophic for Ireland that when finally it looks as if it is really going to happen they would suddenly want to renegotiate the withdrawal deal and the backstop? Does the BBC not want you to know that it is the prospect of ‘no-deal’ that terrifies Ireland and thus could force the EU back to the negotiating table…something the BBC tells us is impossible….magical thinking, wishing for unicorns? Boris hasn’t a chance you know!
The prospect of a ‘no-deal’ is clearly something that does unnerve the EU despite their claims recently that it just doesn’t bother them at all and so to take it off the table as Remainers have tried to do is blatantly and deliberately an attempt to sabotage the British negotiating power…and the BBC backs them up on this continuously as it paints apocalyptic pictures of no-deal for us but strangely forgets to mention just how bad it would be for the Irish…much much worse for them than for us it might be added.
The BBC has lied to us continuously about the backstop….it told us that the backstop was the British government’s idea..no, it wasn’t. It was the Irish government and the EU who cooked up the plan in order to either stop Brexit completely or to make Britain’s negotiating position the weakest possible…as happened.
The BBC told us that to have a hard border would break the Good Friday Agreement…and yet the GFA says nothing about a border other than to remove the military infrastructure..nothing about customs and trade across a border….only that the two government’s must co-operate.

Jo Swinson, who has just said she will do anything to stop Brexit.
She is thereby totally unfit to lead any political party, because she has explicitly rejected the result of the largest ever UK vote (the 2016 EU Referendum) and the confirmation of it in subsequent elections, most recently the sadly necessary EU ones.
She is effectively saying, “Vote for me/us LibDems” and “I will ignore the results of votes.”
I have a bad feeling that we will be hearing a lot more of her in the coming years.

Hold on a minute, what happened to ‘International’ help? I see the emphasis is on ‘European’, aka EU.

It came after allegedly anti-Semitic and Islamophobic comments were attributed to him which later turned out to be hand-picked and carefully-edited quotes. Sir Roger said he faced the ‘complete destruction’ of his ‘career, identity and personality’ after an interview with the Left-wing New Statesman magazine.
It quoted him as saying there was a ‘[George] Soros empire in Hungary’ – referring to the Jewish billionaire investor. But crucially the magazine omitted to say he added: ‘It’s not necessarily an empire of Jews – that’s such nonsense.’
When Sir Roger was sacked by the Government days later, New Statesman deputy editor George Eaton, who wrote the article, celebrated by posting a picture of himself with a bottle of a champagne on Instagram. The photo was captioned: ‘The feeling when you get Right-wing racist and homophobe Roger Scruton sacked as a Tory Government adviser.’

Fallon was his usual, Calm, composed, no sarcastic comment from him to the creature Campbell but plenty from the creature himself. You could sense his anger and annoyance at Fallon proving the BBC person lost the discussion big-time.
Campbell knows nothing about genuine composure. (he loves to laugh at his own jokes too much for that)

G, like London, Venice is actually sinking. Slowly. But still sinking. It needed to be lightened. Believe you are right, a shrinking population with some voluntary jumping overboard. I understand that it is also incredibly expensive both for tourists and residents. Then there’s those Four Freedoms of the EU. They don’t work in Venice.
Some people I know tried to move there – not the tourist old City centre but to the new City centre away from it – and the Italian authorities were not keen on the free movement of people. Funny that!

I think you may be right, that Rev Giles was trying to attack Trump. But what he could have said instead was that the most rigid and harsh of ‘rulers’ can meet the one true living God and be changed by Him. Maybe President Trump has an exciting encounter and life-changing experience ahead of him?
