Don’t agree with Lovelock in his ‘Gaia’ beliefs although I think the thinking behind it has some merit and have long thought along similar lines myself. Where he is wonderful is that he’s a thinking scientist, not a cash collector. He’s brave, too, prepared to speak out against the consensus on wind turbines, for example.

Just listened to Sky News lead item about Jeremy Corbyn attending a wreath laying to terrorists complete with questioning as to his motives and comments from the Israeli PM about the incident, and compared this to the BBC approach – nothing on Live TV, and on their website a 2:03 minute video with Corbyn speaking uninterrupted for 1 minute 53 seconds. No challenges, no analysis, no mention of Israeli responses and absolutely no criticism. Great piece of bias by omission. Oh, is this another example of the “right-wing” bias of the BBC that the lefties go on about?

Today’s court ruled that punishment was too much , cos mistakes were made due to the pressure she was working under.

Well, I’ll stick my neck out here, and say without any evidence, that is probably cos a good portion of them aren’t actually qualified doctors. And some aren’t qualified to anywhere near the standard of British medicine. I’d like to see clearly, in public, how the NHS check the authenticity of foreign doc’s credentials. We’ve already seen in the MSM reports of how some medical staff were buying fake qualifications from Pakistan (ooh, sorry, I didn’t know!).
I have a friend who is tasked to assist foreign doctors with English. They do role playing exercises. One exercise involved the doctor interviewing a couple who where having problems with fertility. The doctor looked at the couple and said ‘How high is your cunt?’
They were shocked I tell you, shocked.
But the doctor was trying to say ‘How high is your sperm count? ‘

There are many things I agree with on this site, but the treatment of Hadiza was appallIng. The first thing to say is that any child dying is a tragedy.
The BBC have been forced to feature it because huge numbers of British medics are leaving practice because of fear of being caught up in a similar situation. The day Jack died Hadiza was covering 2 jobs on her first day back from maternity leave with a non functioning IT system (so all results had to be obtained by phone), a consultant 40 mins away and a mother who gave catastrophic medication (usually taken by Jack for his heart condition) in the mistaken belief that he would be better with it.
Oh, and she trained (university, general and specialist) in Leicester, so need to assess any foreign credentials for this British graduate.

This is a favourite trope of Corbyn’s. It’s sounds so reasonable and civilised, doesn’t it? The one rational, compassionate voice in a parliament of warmongers. His kind of talk impresses the young, the naive and the idealistic.
But actually, Corbyn-type dialogue is useless as a strategy. ETA and the IRA threw in the towel not because of a cycle of dialogue but because the Spanish and the British governments stood firm in their determination to resist the terrorists.
And on the wider international stage, as Victor Davis Hanson has said, history clearly shows that it is only armed deterrence, alliances and the balance of power that keep the peace.

Struck off for honest mistakes
The BBC quickly labels her a ‘trainee doctor’ but she wasn’t, she was a ‘junior doctor’ and junior doctors can be well qualified and senior people. She was qualifed and relatively senior, she was not a green ‘trainee’ just out of medical school that the BBC insinuates.
We aren’t told that the doctors clammering on her behalf are undoubtedly the same doctors that so vocally opposed the government last year in a highly political campaign and this is probably just a continuation of that just as the BBC frames this as a problem of government cuts and shortage of NHS resources. The doctors are of course also covering their own backs, they don’t want to appear in the dock for their mistakes and thus want to have the death of the boy written off as due to systemic failure in the hospital rather than professional failure by the doctor.
Is it resources? The consultant in charge double-booked himself by mistake and had to go elsewhere…so not a resource issue but his own clerical error. The computers crashed…nothing to do with resourcing. Read the long, long report from the BBC and you’ll see that there seemed to be more than enough staff on hand.
What you’ll also notice is that again and again the doctor says she regrets failing to do something or to notice something or to pass on information. The BBC does its best to pass this off as due to tiredness, or not being up to speed because she’d just come back from maternity leave, or lack of resources or systemic failure, or other staff not performig up to scratch…but ultimately it was her fault.
The real sickener I suspect for the family might be the picture the BBC put at the bottom of the article that has been so carefully crafted to exonerate the doctor….
Kind of expect the parents not to be quite so happy as the BBC…

I agree completely. I read Al Beeb’s article, which is very long, but couldn’t make it through completely cos it was pissing me off so much. You are right – the level of self interest, selfishness and ego is astounding. If you care about helping people that much, but made such basic errors as to lead to a child’s death, would you want to go back into that field of work? What a sense of entitlement. And the article has a ‘who else can we blame’ theme running through it – the consultant who resigned and went back to Ireland, being an obvious candidate. Honest mistakes – what a typical load of biased shit from the BBC.

Unity was in evidence during a major meeting in Tunisia, reports JEREMY CORBYN
October 1 is a poignant day in Palestinian history and is commemorated in Tunisia. This year was no exception as a group of us gathered at the hillside cemetery overlooking the villages and walked down to the town and the beautiful blue
Mediterranean where in 1986 Israeli jets screamed in to bomb the relocated headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, causing many deaths.
The offices and buildings were destroyed and once again Palestinians, in exile, became the victims.
The PLO had relocated after the massacres at Sabra and Shatilla in 1982 when Israeli troops oversaw massacres by Phalangist militias at the huge refugee camps in Lebanon, home to Palestinians driven from their homes in 1948.
After wreaths were laid at the graves of those who died on that day and on the graves of others killed by Mossad agents in Paris in 1991, we moved to the poignant statue in the main avenue of the coastal town of Ben Arous, which was festooned with Palestinian and Tunisian flags.
Palestine has a special place in Tunisian hearts. In the first days of the revolution in 2011 when long-term detainees were released and a huge welcoming rally was held in a sports centre, the first thing many did was to raise the Palestinian flag.
This year was another special event. A one-day conference was held under the auspices of the Centre for Strategic Studies for North Africa, just north of Tunis, near Carthage, attended by all Palestinian groups.
Held on the back of the ceasefire following Israel’s most recent bloody military attack on the Palestinians, once again the issue of reconstruction of Gaza was on the agenda, as it was after the destruction in 2009 following Operation Cast Lead.
Ever since the elections of 2005 and 2006 which saw Fatah gaining most support in the West Bank and Hamas winning in Gaza, the strategy of the West and Israel has been to divide them and continue the occupation.
The formation of the unity government between Hamas and Fatah in April, following the collapse of talks with Israel over settlements in December, seems to have been the main catalyst for recent Israeli actions.
Part of the justification for the onslaught was the allegation that Hamas had abducted and killed three Israeli students in Hebron. After a period of collective punishment came the appalling death toll of 2,100 Palestinian dead and 100 Israeli casualties during the so-called Protective Edge assault.
As once again the world is asked to help with reconstruction of Gaza, the people there — shell-shocked and bereaved — face an environmental and medical disaster in the face of the shortages of clean water and materials for rebuilding.
The UN Human Rights Council has already established an investigation into war crimes, despite opposition from the US and a European-wide abstention. There is also the question of whether and if the International Criminal Court will bring a case against Israel.
While Palestine is recognised by the UN following the General Assembly vote, it has not signed the Rome Statute or the Fourth Geneva Convention (which deals with war crimes and collective punishment) which would empower it, as a state, to take Israel on legally.
The conference was welcomed by the President of Tunisia Dr Moncef Marzouki and heard opening speeches from Palestinian groups including Fatah, Hamas, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine as well as solidarity from the Turkish parliament and international support.
A very poignant and much appreciated speech came from Ramsey Clarke, a long-term campaigner for international justice and former US attorney general under Jimmy Carter’s presidency.
An intense discussion followed with strong views being put that Palestine should join the International Criminal Court and Geneva conventions.
Renowned barrister Toby Cadman gave a masterful demonstration of the role international law can play in supporting the victims of occupation and the siege of Gaza.
A 14-point summary was agreed which included joining the ICC process, asking for real and practical support from the Arab League, international support to end the siege of Gaza, seeking a special UN court to try war criminals, an International Court opinion on the legality of the siege and legal responsibility on Israel for the destruction of Gaza.
Crucially it also called for the development of sea and airports.
The last point made was that foreign nationals serving in the Israeli Defence Force could become the subject of war crimes accusations following the bombing of civilian targets.
The significance of the conference was obviously the outcome of a shared agenda and endeavour, but also the unity between all Palestinian factions and parties.

In my own speech to the conference there was great enthusiasm for the prospects of a British parliamentary vote on October 13 on Palestinian statehood. Grahame Morris MP, the chairman of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East has proposed a motion to the House of Commons recognising the state of Palestine.
Already Israeli supporters are saying no motion should be debated until the long-stalled peace talks reach a conclusion.
However Palestine supporters, who demonstrated in such huge numbers in August, are flooding MPs with emails supporting the call for Palestine to be given the full recognition it has been denied ever since the end of the Ottoman Empire.
October 13 gives a chance for Britain to finally break with US policy on the Middle East and give full political recognition to Palestine.

In 2017 only 0.15% of prisoners were trans. 48% had committed one or more sexual offence but the MoJ didn’t reveal their gender (maybe it was confused?). Reality check says there are likely to be more transgenders…more likely it hopes there are.

The BBC do not understand tariffs at all. Either that or they are deliberately misrepresenting the truth for their own political purposes.
President Trump is being blamed for depressing the value of the Turkish Lira due to his imposition of tariffs on some Turkish metal imports to the USA.
For any on here not yet informed on the matter, the immediate economic effect of a tariff is an increase of cost in the imposing country. It is not on the exporter country and its population. An effect there could and may well come in future but much later. Not straight away. That effect is felt by a US customer this morning or whenever the new tariff takes effect.

He claimed that Cameron was against social housing. The truth is that Cameron’s administration from 2015> (if not in 2010 – cannot remember which) scrapped the ban on Local Authorities reinvesting the proceeds of property sales in new social housing.
I also have a notion at the back of my head that some additional grants were also made available to LAs to increase their stock of social housing but cannot be certain of that without spending hours digging in the interwebby.

We visit and stay in Vienna roughly every second year. Its main problem is too many tourists which is hypocritical of me to say it as I am one myself there. As I spent much of yesterday raging about the BBC’s censorship by omission – ignoring the Corbyn wreath laying scandal – I note that they eventually did get around to coverage of it.
But you can already see where the coverage is heading. Unlike Letterboxgate, this one won’t be allowed to run and run by the Beeb.
The TV news round-up by some correspondent this morning focused mostly on Labour support for Corbyn, with scant analysis of the incident itself and no context about Corbyn’s other terrorist links. Indeed, the correspondent described the “intervention” by Israel’s PM as “extraordinary”….so he’s the one we should be concerned about, was the underlying message.
A Today radio piece managed to find a Jewish Labour spokeswoman who spent five minutes defending Corbyn, although the interviewer did put her under some robust questioning.
Meanwhile, on the BBC website the item is now towards the bottom of the home page, under a story about rainbow trout being called salmon in China!
And that, dear cynics, is where the BBC would like this particular item to wallow.
TOADY WATCH: I was still waking up, but was that the arrogant Justin Webb lecturing Tim Peake on Intelligent Design? Webb seemed to think that any belief in Creationism ran counter to ‘science’ and implied that as such, it was not credible.
Much of the theory around the ‘Big Bang’ rather than the steady state version of the universe makes a creationist view far more likely, many scientist now concede.
And in my opinion, ‘science’ has not even begun answering any of the really critical questions about the universe.
We need someone a little less biased than Webb to broach this sort of subject.
