Bet Beria and Goebbels wish that THEY`D come up with a Volk Union kind of phrase like “hate speech crimes” or “foreign collusion”.

Goebbels didn’t need to come up with “hate speech crimes” because the Weimar Republic had already brought in these laws which were used to prosecute the Nazis. Hitler was able to portray himself as a ‘victim’ and, on gaining power, use these laws against his opponents in turn.

The problem with governments is that they always want to do something – to legislate against people doing something . At least if we had had a proper constitution years ago they wouldn’t be able to inflict further restrictions on Liberty .
Define “ hate speach “ or even “ hate” I can’t. That means it’s fluid and therefore dangerous legislation .
Al beeb has always been part of the “ something must be done “ brigade and so it would be no surprise they’d support legislation .
If Glenn Greenwald wants to know what real hate speech legislation looks like he should visit one of our schools where pupils are being disciplined if they refuse to refer to transgender individuals by their new choice of sex.
One day they know someone as Johnny, next day Johnny changes their name to Joanne and little children get disciplined because they don’t understand.

The trouble with hate speech legislation is that it is selectively applied. You can hold a banner saying British soldiers burn in hell, death to unbelievers. But Tommy Robinson was arrested for holding a flag saying Fuck Isis.

I have a lot of time for Tommy and have read his book.
However he was arrested for wearing an offensive hat… I mean just look at it!
Sadly, too few value “free speech”. If you’ve never had it or always had it – or unless you read any history about places that haven’t had it – then I guess it is intangible. “All it asks is that we don’t speak hatefully about others who are different. Only fascists would think that is unreasonable!” It defies belief that people would so naively fall for it. but they do. The irony is that banning hate speech removes a community’s ability to find common, shared principles by which to live. Today, we all see our “common shared values” in the West being increasingly defined by Governments, who in turn are reflecting the sensibilities of Islam amongst others: As we know, the latter is not a belief set with a stellar history of tolerance and enlightenment. And the concept of a Government dictating a single acceptable set of beliefs is not exactly a practice with a great track record either. (The two also have an interesting track record of working well together in Europe, not so long ago, but I got banned from the DM for mentioning that and asking if history was repeating itself!). The only solution I can see is a sudden rise in Direct Democracy; a new Farage like entity, who makes “populism” popular, backed by a slightly unhinged but good-natured billionaire who recruits a few dozen highly credible libertarian-leaning, bright nice people to form a party (think 10 cloned Douglas Murrays etc). Alas, our species do seem to like being told what to do and think, however idiotic the instructions.
