ELECTION NIGHT THREAD…..

When the polls close at 1opm, the BBC coverage kicks in and I am sure you will want to comment on it here! I predict an emotional breakdown as I don’t believe a word that the ‘Polls’ are suggesting! The floor is yours….

Sorry, Grant but either stupid or, become unfamiliar with UK politics due to long sojourns overseas. I strongly suspect …

      … the latter.

Theresa May has an electoral mandate, just like Gordon Brown in 2010. Unlike Brown, she has been er, strong and and and, er, umh, decisive, in bolting (oh, that phrase! – will we ever shake it off?) at earliest opportunity to the Palace to obtain HM’s blessing. It is now up to her Party to either dispose of her or for the PM to call another General Election and allow the electorate to do the job. Or not, as the case may be.

        Up2,

You are right about the latter. But your explanation is about as clear as mud in the River Gambia. I am having to try and explain these matters to young Gambians who think that Britain is the model for democracy. Quite frankly, your post has set me back a bit.

Grant, you may need to explain how our Parliament’s main house is divided among Parties and independents. Theresa May’s Party won the most seats when a comparison is made among all the Parties, the Independents obviously numbering just one in every case. I would have thought Africans might have a good sense of (probably better than many Brits here) of that Parliamentary structure.

The Conservatives are also the encumbent and as such have a priority in seeking to form a Government by seeking and making a formal or informal coalition with another Party or Parties to give them overall voting control (potential head count) for either their legislation or a Vote of Confidence.

Gordon Brown nearly initiated a Constitutional crisis in 2010 by neither seeking a Coalition or going to see the Queen for her to approve his minority Party in forming a Government and continuing in his role as her Prime Minister. People were almost starting to get worried about having army tanks going in to Downing Street. Something your African friends in Gambia can no doubt relate to!

That last vote, the Vote of Confidence is something anyone in Parliament is entitled to put before the House and, if seconded, and passed it is highly unlikely that a PM of a minority Party in government would want to try to remain in power as they would be unable to carry out the Queen’s business both day-to-day and the legislative business contained in the Queen’s Speech.

          Does that help?

[Just a BBC related postscript here. How could I spew out all the above? Well, in a large part it was due to my school education where we taught such stuff back then. But it is also due to the BBC and their political coverage from long ago, way before there was any sign of them becoming partial or dumbed down or defective or even all three. It is, I think, a bit of a testament as to the good effect that a good, national broadcaster can have on its viewers and listeners.

Good national broadcaster … as was.

          🙁 ]

Speaking purely for myself, I want the best person for the job at any given time and it might well be that May is that person for the time being, but certainly not in the longer term.

There’s no doubt that she’s been damaged, but I don’t want hasty decisions being made about her replacement, only to go through the same process again if her replacement turns out to have been a mistake. I have unhappy memories of the Conservatives going through several leaders after Thatcher – not impressive.

Furthermore, I don’t want her kicked out as a petulantly imposed punishment. We need to be calm and get Brexit negotiations under way. That matters more to me.

Remember that she performed badly but won (sort of). Corbyn is widely believed to have run a good campaign, offered to hose money all over the place, but still lost – on first past the post and on the popular vote.

I’m no fan of May, believe me, but a week is a long time in politics. Other issues will come and go.

But who can you trust, that’s the problem. Apparently David Davis was wobbling a few days ago on what we can expect to get from Brexit. That really did surprise me. Can we trust Boris? Not sure about that either.

As I mentioned above, after Thatcher the Conservatives had several goes at finding the right leader, and after several years in the wilderness, finally ended up with Cameron. Cameron saddled us with a coalition after a GE against Gordon Brown who, unlike Corbyn, had demonstrably failed as PM.

Appoint someone in haste now and we’ll have people saying he/she has not won a GE and has no mandate. We might also get another Cameron.

              Can’t win.

One thing which has struck me since the election is just how continually inept May is. She is a lame duck and yet she will not stand aside and allow the inevitable leadership challenge to take place, she appears determined to negotiate Brexit, and perhaps stagger on until the next election
    .
Maybe there is some sense in allowing her to take the blame for any Brexit issues, but she has proven that she cannot beat a diminished Corbyn with the backing of only 40 MPs and some decided dodgy shadow ministers, now who ever runs the next election campaign will have to take on the largely wholly united Labour party as they come together behind Corbyn.

They now have the benefit of knowing exactly what the game plan of Labour is going to be, and they should already be costing it (they should have done that during the 7 weeks) pointing out the consequences of a bankrupt economy, and the countries which are victims of Socialism themselves.

As per usual though the Tories are sitting back navel gazing fighting amongst themselves and failing to realise that the rest of the world is watching the unpleasant spectacle.

Thoughtful. I don’t think the labour voters care about costings. If you promise everything on the money tree and say you’ll only up tax for the wealthiest 5% you ll win. You can say and do as many stupid things in the campaign but counts for nothing .
I still think there are similarities between Trumps promises and Corbyns. Certain people swallow that stuff with or without al BBC bias

It’s just funny if you look back at a pic of what May should grow, but then scroll slowly down through your spoof pic, to see on ‘her’ head, what she already has! You may need to mentally rotate the image through 90 degrees if that helps.

In a way, it is actually quite a politically apposite point.

          Or pair of points.

May will not be leading them into the next GE for sure – so just when does she go? A month before the next GE?
Having made such a catastrophic error of judgement she really needs to come up some results and soon.
I do wonder if real fatigue has set in amongst the Tories and therefore they are desperate need of sound, inspiring leadership.

”so just when does she go? ”

Eddy, gaxvil has a point. The situation we find ourselves in (beware, I’m girding my loins to witter at some length on here about what the PM could and should do this next week) is I think going to fix around two ‘poles’; the northern one being Brexit delivery and the southern one an undercutting of the opposition.

        More later.

OTOH, you could be right. Maybe TM was set up as PM to be a ‘patsy’ to keep us in the EU. But that doesn’t explain Cameron’s calling of the EU Referendum. Nor that May is – if you think back – only Party leader and PM by default. Remember Andrea Leadsom?

BBC News – Tory chief whip in Belfast talks with DUP, still the charade continues

The Tories are a disaster, and completely culpable even complicit in the terror mass murders we have had
… ever since they conned the public into giving them power the last time.
May … The Liar In Chief was a wilfully clueless, national liability Home Secretary, and now a lying, turncoat,
    beneath contempt PM.
MI5 Cut, Security Intel Cut, GCHQ Cut, Police Officer Cut, Firearm Officers Cut.
We had 8 viable mass murder attempts in just 70 days, and 3 were successful because of it.
I can tell you clearly if the London attack was anywhere else the carnage would have been much higher,
and still they scheme, lie, use sophistry, to avoid their negligence, and dangerous incompetence, over it
… in fact now, shamefully, (usefully for the Tories) its almost forgotten about already.

Today, she is STILL incapable of listening, utterly incompetent U turns and folds quicker than a cheap tent.
Her one delusion was to go to EU and try and frighten them, with this huge majority well, now she s got no authority carries no confidence here … never mind at the EU. (and the best comedy she s the best of them)

Apparently the Tory chief whip is meeting with the DUP in Belfast in talks over possibly forming a government, that’s today!!
Yesterday Liar May was out like a juiced up whippet, to race to see the queen,(with Arthur Askey in tow)
… no majority, no scruples eh!
I hope she dropped into the cash point first, because the DUP (even more than Tories if that’s possible) know all about
    dodgy dealings.

The Tories, and their toilet paper press have just spent entire campaign pointing finger and yelling IRA, IRA. at J Corbyn
… 5 secs in and she’s in bed with DUP, as Tories turn to prop up their failure?
Yep! The party that collapsed the N.Ire. Government due to financial scandals.
The DUP press conference looked like bloody Nurse Ratchet and cast of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
… so will fit in perfectly with the Tory front bench.

With almost perfect irony, the Tory bleat of, “strong and stable” is exactly how they ve enabled the opposition.
Simply by er being the stereotypical lying Tory … arrogant, incompetent, grasping, lying and out of touch.

Even today, its hilarious, their still at it, its the advisors, its the manifesto of misery,(ie normal tory manifesto) its May.

No it isn t … the change is J Corbyn, if only he had, had the full campaign, the Tories would be out, its almost as if these
buffoons have been lying to each other for so long, they believe their own sh-t..

Look, they called the election, better prepared than anyone else, had all of the MSM, the toilet paper press the Sun, the Torygraph, the Express, the Mail, a disgraceful, spiteful lying smear campaign, the lizard of Aus, £130 million from us, the Hedgefunds.
Just look at that Chris Grayling only yesterday, a slimy smirking sh-tbag, that busy sneering, just as bad as liar May herself.

There has been a change, the Tory neo liberal crap is buried, the big lie is busted …that’s it good riddance.
The Tory wankerati are just too busy looking down their snotty noses to realise.

nog – The last year that Theresa May was Home Secretary 650,000 immigrants legally entered the UK. Between 1066 and 1939 fewer immigrants entered England than in that single year of May’s tenure in charge of the Home Office, also that figure doesn’t include illegal immigration.

The stuff re Cressida Dick above surely reminds us of what the REAL politics of all this is.
The last two weeks have seen Muslim atrocities on out streets, the governing class mute and cowering.
So whether the BBC “understands” that Mays advisers have bullied such streaks of piss like Hammond and Grayling may WELL matter to the political rune reading cabbages.
But not to me, or anybody I know anyway.
We`ve also seen yet more assaults on Trump from the media.
But as for Benghazi or Fast And Furious-REAL scandals from Obamas inept administration? Well, no peep from those sniffing Trumps laundry basket(day 130 and rising).
The only game in town for the media is Brexit, and we play a mugs game if we bitch at May.
Yes, inept political machinations-but she was not chosen by us to deliver Brexit. The Tory Party chose her, and if they sent her out without the guide wheels of Lawson, Lilley, Tebbit or whoever…then blame the Party, not the only politiclan who seems intent on giving us the 23rd June decision as best as she can.
The media want her out as do the EU maniacs in her party, the Tory jellies who are mere weathervanes, not signposts. If the BBC and CNN want you gone-seems to me that we need you to dig in and stay.
Time for her maybe to send for Sir Nigel Farage…a gallant knight we would love to see, if only she`d realise that a Hard Brexit will immortalise her-and he alone has the trust of Britain to do it( and be the salt for the EU slugs we seek).
If she fails to do that, and stays nasty about him-well her Bible will remind her of what happens if you don`t grab God-given destinies like this one.

ChrisH, I said as much in an email to number 10 which I sent off a while ago. Time to call on Mr Farage. As if she would! There are a few things Teresa could do that would have many of us cheering. Chain saw the CBB, tell Brussels to fuck off, stop Muslims from entering the UK and intern/deport those that are a threat or consider themselves Muslims first and UK citizens second.(that would be all of them.) It seems easy, it should be easy and very doable but we live with too many enemies among us.

Totally agree Chris – But I dont think the teezer possesses either the mental agility or the imagination to realise that Farage is probably the one person who could get her out of this self made mess. The BBC has been far more of a enemy and an embarrassment to her than Farage (who just wanted her to carry out the electorates wishes) – yet has she taken them to task even once? – Well we all know the answer to that one.

She made her mind up a long time ago that Farage is “far right” and thats that, when in fact it is the Tories who have moved to the left. And it is now only UKIP and the DUP who are standing up for traditional British rights and way of life. The rest of the parties having enthusiastically taking on the progressive policies of the left like a blubottle landing on its first ever turd.

She is a woman of few principles other than self preservation remember she employed every trick in the book to undermine Farage and UKIP thinking she would just suck the UKIP votes up like a line of charlie. Amusing that it is partly that same line of Charlie that has now bitten her on the nose. How very apt.

For all her posturing as some sort of Paladin of virtue I think in truth she is a very nasty piece of work and I suspect she was more than fully aware of the treatment meted out to the likes of Tommy Robinson for telling the truth about Islam. And encouraging our judiciary and pc police to hound those involved in bacon crime whilst those actively involved in terror plots against were dealt with by a velvet glove.

If I was Farage would I help her out? – Definitely not – She cannot be trusted with brexit and I think that either through incompetence or malevolence even with Farages support she would still balls it all up but this time bringing Farage down with her as well.

Maybe saying all this is just a kneejerk reaction on my part but Leopards rarely change their spots and this particular one has much previous in the incompetence and lying stakes. Stay for a few weeks – maybe – but after that the wakizashi beckons. Would she take it I dont know but if not then I am sure there are a few who would give a helping hand.

    Good news at 6pm.

    One boil has been lanced.

Hill & Timothy have done the decent thing and have resigned, or more likely insisted on resigning. I guess the PM would have wanted to keep them and initially declined their offers but according to the tenor of the news, ultimatums had been received from within the Cabinet. May is secure for the time being.

This week and next will be critical. Not just because of the EU negotiations but all sorts of monthly economic stats will be appearing. The PM with the Chancellor has a golden opportunity to win back some lost ground.

I think the PM also needs to call senior Tories to account for their non-appearance and/or their ineffective campaigning. Not in a heads on the block sort of way but in a public, ‘this is why, it was because … , we are now fully in support of the PM and the Cabinet/Government in what we have to do.’. It needs to be done in a very short period of time – ideally by Friday – and then the PM needs to make it clear that is all over and done with.

After that, the PM or Chancellor need to come out with an initiative that cuts the ground from under Corbyn and Labour and, most of all, can be achieved in a short period of time.

    I have a cunning plan.

If ‘strong and stable’ was the mantra then why did they not let out the strong and stable cabinet ministers to campaign?
Spreadsheet Phil, David Davis, Michael Fallon. Yes, they are boring. But they do what it says on the tin!

Instead the campaign centred solely on May, who cannot perform unless behind a lectern.

Sluff, no-one shuts a Chancellor up during a General Election campaign. Well, at least no-one in their right mind. If the CoE is refusing or off-message, then there’s only one thing to do – sack him or her. Same with other Cabinet colleagues. When did Boris appear for his ‘interview’ with Mishal? Monday? Tuesday? Of the last week? Incredible!

Fallon deliberately subverted the campaign on tax during the last weekend. In the PM’s place, I would have sacked him yesterday or, at least, immediately publicly called him to account for that in a ‘Mea culpa’ and forgiven moment. Needs to be dealt with and out of the way.

Davis was around early on but you have to remember he has an extra job at the moment, due to start 8am or 9am in Brussels on Monday.

If it was a branding attempt (and I seriously doubt that), Theresa May as Strong and Stable, it doesn’t mean that Cabinet Ministers are not needed to go round the radio & TV studios with a simple word about a policy from their department plus ‘the message’. I am not advocating doing the full-on Labour Party, Campbell and Mandleson control thing, just showing up and doing your bit. Senior Ministers noticeably did not do that with the exception of Fallon and one or two others, Green and Rudd for example.

BTW, the PM disappeared overseas during the campaign to do something Boris could have taken care of. If it was a ‘May leads’ campaign, they managed to undermine it just with that.

I was the prime minister who led Britain into the community and I’m naturally delighted that the referendum is working out as it is In 1983, it was Thatcher who wrote that “the unity of Europe is a goal for which I pledge my government to work”.
Heath with typical Tory self serving deceit within weeks of entering Downing Street in 1970, applied to Brussels for the third time! for entry
Scarcely had negotiations begun than he learned that his future partners were already discussing the next steps along their path to full integration: a single currency, European defence forces, a common foreign policy.
It was Heath himself who immediately sent word to Brussels pleading for all this to be kept quiet, because it might blow up with the British voters.

Yes absolutely and the great British public were lied to massively at the time.
I come from a family of 9 voters in 1973 and I was the only one who was adamant about voting ‘No’ to Heath and his Common Market ideology. I am determined to see this Brexit through (please Parliament).

Plus don’t forget that now in 2017 we are net contributors to the EU. We put in far more money than we get back. We are bailing out the poorer countries but the only country prospering is – surprise, surprise, Deutschland. Plus don’t forget the youth unemployment in Europe is 25% plus. That’s why they’re here in the UK working.

Pull, yes me too for a REAL politician in those days eh! we would have ended it in 75 but
… for Margaret Thatcher. In fact it was only on the arrival of Jacques “down drawers” Delors, a French socialist, as president of the European Commission that Tory party turn coated and became against it.
They were utterly self serving Europhiles then, conning the British population, and they are still lying and manipulating now.
What I think is apparent is that you have the establishment, the old boy network with financial clout the string pullers, trying to pull the same con on the British public as they did in 1973 and
1975, as usual with them it is self serving and blinkered short termism , and most importantly above the good of our nation … we need a clear out of all these “crook”moneyed, grasping bastards and at all costs keep them away from negotiating in the EU

I remember the periods 1973-1975 as a time of miners strikes, three day week, energy blackouts, OPEC oil embargo, following Yom Kippur, which ended up quadrupling the oil price overnight. This more than anything sounding the death knell of our deep sea fishing industry and its associated trades and skills. Didn’t do much for the economy either! We thought mistakenly, that voting to stay in the common market would alleviate all these problems. We were wrong!

And now for something completely different.
Despite the huge and obvious Tory own goals, they actually got roughly the vote they expected.
What no-one has remarked on, especially the bBBC is the fall in vote from the Greens and LibDems.
The Green vote more than halved, down 2 percentage points. No-one has commented.
The Lib Dem vote went down 0.5 percentage points. Down even from the record low in 2015.
In other words, Corbyn took vote share from the other left wing parties. Those three percentage points made a big difference in the marginals.
And remember too that the UKIP vote share collapsed way beyond every poll expectation. A late swing to Corbyn?
Add to that the student yoof vote (a massive strategic Tory oversight, agreed) and what you have is an outperformance from a single consolidated left wing vote.
There are holes in this logic I’ m sure, but the polling statistics do provide an evidence base to support the proposition.

Noting none of that “Mrs May winning the popular vote” stuff from the Left.
You`d think that that mattered-certainly was used enough( and deceitfully) to try and get Our Hillary into the White House by the tradesmans. But no-Labour lose that vote, have less seats.
But -being the Left-yet another moral victory.
Does the Left get any OTHER kind of victory?
Jo Cox weekend next week. If May has any pride left , she`ll give Bob Geldof and Gina Miller the keys to the country. And handcuff all our students to the nearest lamp post to the Islamic Centre on campus. Easier that home made jam, which Corbyn can`t guarantee to be halal.

I was on my local paper’s comment section earlier, Sluff and if the contributors reflect the view of the electorate, then we are really stuffed, Sluff! The consensus was that Corbyn “won” because he had the best policies and didn’t ignore and talk down to the young. When one brave soul suggested he merely offered them free money from his money orchard, it was like the torch and pitchfork bearers paying Frankenstein a house call. The overwhelming consensus was that his mobilisation of the young is a movement that can only swell and grow in number and finally smash a government who only wanted to kill foxes, means test WFA and take old peoples’ houses away It’s going to take a long time to remove these perceptions if it is even possible. But every generation has to experience socialism for themselves to realise just how bad things are under its sway.

And nothing yet about Scotlands students voting Tory, because they could not be bribed by Corbyn over student tuition fees. They don`t pay any.
Which tells me that Corbyn bribed university towns and did better as a result.
To think we used to laugh when the squire bought his estates vote with a barrel of beer or some windfall apples-bribery when done by the toffs, good politics when done by the Child Catcher.
Any chance of us finding out about those postal votes, as well as the double voting of students who were registered both at university and at home.

Why are you guys just following the Media’s agenda of sneering at May ??

Perhaps because every so often there is a truth so obvious that even the media cannot lie about it?

Here are the reasons why we should sneer at May:

She had a majority and didn’t need to call an election

She promised she wasn’t going to call a snap election but then did.

She was warned that her two SPADs were not up to the job, that her circle of advisors was too limited, that she failed to engage with back benchers and did nothing to change

She had the worst manifesto of all time – probably even worse than Michael Foot’s longest suicide note

      She attacked her own supporters

She ran the worst election campaign I can remember

After failing to win a majority there was no contrition what so ever, she gave a speech which showed a complete detachment from reality, and failed to apologise for her abysmal performance.

The speed with which she was able to announce a coalition with the DUP made it look like it was a pre arranged deal.

Everything is now up in the air and there is no longer any certainty, or a clear sense of where the government is headed.

Yes I think we can sneer at Theresa May because she absolutely deserves it.
