Anyone look at the BBC’s website home page? It contains an item called “features” – presumably things which the BBC thinks are important. Ten items. Today, which is typical, has 8 items which have no particular relavance to the UK., though they may be moderately interesting if there were not real issues of UK importance to “feature”. But it’s like this day after day. Subliminal measages. This is no longer the “British” Broadcasting Corp, why am I forced to pay for this?

I don’t think this is any different to Radio 4 to be honest with you where there also seems to be a disproportionate coverage of non-British culture and current affairs. Don’t get me wrong, some of the programmes can be interesting – it’s their quasi-omnipresence and the BBC’s obvious and overbearing multiculti agenda that gets a bit wearing.
Onlyne I completely agree with you about BBC site not being British oriented. The Football section will often headline Spanish and Italian results over the Premier Leauge’s which is not just secondary but also difficult to find at all on ocassions.
I agree. It’s a massive pain in the rear to find the results from the home page. Frankly, it makes you wonder if it is deliberately obscure.
The answer is when you finally track down the right page bookmark that and replace the BBC Football page.

If you listen to Tony Hall’s speech where he lays out his vision for the future of the BBC (sorry this is on tablet and I have no idea how to make a link) but it is available on line, he mentions several times that he wants a ‘global’ BBC. Now I thought most of the BBC’s money came from us the license payers, shouldn’t Lord Hall be thinking how best to serve us in the UK?
so – my rule is never to look at the BBC if you want to see the news or the football results. They only total up their hits and report them as if they are making a success of the £6B a year we gift them.
I always go to other sites, except when I see an article and think : ‘I wonder how the left are spinning this?’ – then I go to the Guardian or BBBC, often ending up on the ‘complaints’ page –

Listened to the fragrant Natalie Bennett being “interviewed” on Five Live this morning.
She spouted the usual AGW crap – but what I found interesting was how she denounced fracking. As the process needs vast quantities of water one of the dangers the UK faced – should we go down the fracking route – was drought.
This not days after we’ve experienced the greatest downpours and flooding since records began.
This will surely be challenged I thought. Surely it will be picked up and challenged.
Then I realised it was the BBC. Rolled over and went back to sleep.

This point – about water – was discussed with someone from the Royal Society of Engineers (but unfortunately the BBC didn’t listen to his answer which would have enabled them to challenge Bennett). He said that the excessive use water had been an issue in the early days for fracking, but new systems and technologies had been developed that now allowed wells to recycle and use the same water over and over again.
On the question of electricity generation, he pointed out at least twice (but was ignored by Gameshow – for it was on his ‘show’) that we also needed gas for heat, not just electricity.
I suppose though, that Bennett and her (former Communist Party member) friend, Lucas, would sooner we were dependent for our energy on their mate Putin and Mother Russia.
Yes, I tried sticking a wind turbine on top of my gas boiler but just would not work. What do the greens expect the 15million with boilers to do.
Why is this never asked of the greens when they allow them to spout there rubbish.
I thought it was more like 20+ million households that have gas-fired central heating. Whatever the exact number, suppose these all had to be changed to some sort of electrical heating system. How many windmills would it take to provide the power to heat and supply hot water to this number of homes? Natalie? Nicky?
Prof. Styles of Keele University says that a fracking well uses as much water in its lifetime as a golf course does in a month.
The difference is that the well reuses its water and the golf course doesn’t.
Why go for local shale gas? Surely it is better to get it from Russia via Ukraine(!!) or Quatar(!!) (outbid by the Japanese anyway)?
Pipelines leak and the gas is a greater ‘global warmer’ than Carbon Dioxide. The longer the pipeline the greater the leakage.

Cash keeps rolling in for BBC’s six-figure big shots
Despite the new director-general’s pledges, some of the top earners have seen their pay grow, write Nicholas Hellen and Robin Henry (£)
THE BBC is facing a row over its bloated bureaucracy after an investigation revealed salary rises for some of its most highly paid staff, with more than 80 earning in excess of £150,000.
Despite pledges to cut bureaucracy, and a pay freeze in the public sector, the number of senior executives earning more than £100,000 has increased under Lord Hall, its new director-general, according to an official BBC register of elite staff.
The register also shows that thirteen executives earning more than the prime minister’s £142,500-a-year salary have had rises of as much as 10% in the past year. There are at least 82 executives on more than £150,000, well above the official target of 70.
Hall launched his campaign last week for a new royal charter, starting in 2017, and said £100m in cuts would be announced this month. Jobs at BBC News may be hit.
He acknowledged: “When you point to the BBC you are pointing to an organisation that makes mistakes.”
However, since he took over in April at least 18 high-paid executives have been been given pay rises, despite no changes to their job titles.
Top of the list was Mark Linsey, controller of entertainment commissioning, who declared a 10% pay rise, taking his salary to £222,000 and his total remuneration to £230,000. He took on some new responsibilities.
Claire Dresser, chief adviser, vision, recorded a salary of £109,433 and total remuneration of £114,233 last November — a rise of nearly £10,000 on her listing for June.
Eyebrows have also been raised at the salaries of some of the new team of executive directors Hall has assembled. The corporation is obliged to follow the BBC Trust’s pay strategy 2011-15, which urges the corporation “to reduce our senior management paybill through recruiting senior managers who are paid less than the previous incumbent”.
Yet in came Anne Bulford, a former colleague of Hall at the Royal Opera House, on a base salary of £395,000, substantially more than the £352,000 paid to Zarin Patel, the former chief financial officer. Danny Cohen was promoted from controller of BBC1 to director of television in May, on pay of £320,000 and total remuneration of £327,800. This was significantly more than the £270,000 base pay of George Entwistle as director of vision in 2011-12.
James Harding became director of news and current affairs on the same rate as his predecessor, Helen Boaden, £340,000.
In his defence Hall could point to the fact that Bulford had wider responsibilities than Patel, and Cohen did not receive a pay increase on his promotion from controller of BBC1.
But figures unearthed by The Sunday Times suggest Hall may be having problems controlling executive pay below board level.
The BBC insisted this weekend that he had continued to make progress in hacking back the general group of “senior managers”, reducing their pay bill by £2m in the period March 31 last year to January 1.
But among the elite group of about 100 executives required to declare their salaries and expenses quarterly, this process appears to have stalled and in parts may even have gone into reverse.
The list of managers who declared their pay rose from 103 in March 2013, before Hall joined, to 111 today plus four non-executive directors. Analysis by The Sunday Times shows that the true increase is from 100 to 102 now, once recently departed staff and non-executive directors are eliminated from the current list. Of these, 87 receive remuneration higher than the combined parliamentary and ministerial pay of David Cameron. More pressingly for Hall, 82 receive remuneration of more than £150,000.
According to the official target, that number should now be around the 70 mark and must be reduced to 65 by the end of next year.
The BBC said in a statement: “The website still contains profiles of a number of individuals who have left the organisation and simply counting them doesn’t deliver up-to-date numbers — the latest figures show senior manager numbers have reduced under Tony Hall by more than 25 people, reducing the pay bill by more than £2m.”
In his conference speech, Hall insisted that the licence fee today offered vastly better value than it did 20 years ago — with four times more television channels for a lower fee in real terms. Now the test is whether he can demonstrate the same value for money on the issue of pay.
The BBC’s approach to paying ‘top talent’ is like something dreamt up by Joseph Heller.

Last week the BBC were reporting Obama’s threat to Russia as ‘don’t or else ……’ Well it didn’t work with Syria so it was never going to work with Putin. Yet the BBC reported it as though Obama’a words were the words of a world statesman when he is obviously a headless chicken.

Watched a limited amount of the Winter Olympics. Very surprised to hear Hugh Porter commentating on events including speed skating; he did a pretty good job I thought, for a former world champion professional cyclist who was the voice of cycling on the BBC until dropped because he was too old or some such rubbish.
Watched the World cycling championships today on BBC2 with the latest BBC commentators, Boardman is very knowledgeable, but the commentary lacks the passion that Hugh gave it. Why we have a triple jumper in the studio in the studio beats me.
As a point of information does anyone know what is going on with the BBC having Hugh at the Winter Olympics having dropped him from his cycling role?
Apologies if this has been covered before but has anyone noticed over the last 2 weeks or so the BBC has also started to refer to Burma by its traditional name of ‘Myanmar’?
Did a quick google on it and the most recent BBC article I could find was from 2007. Here is what part of it said:
‘A statement by the Foreign Office says: “Burma’s democracy movement prefers the form ‘Burma’ because they do not accept the legitimacy of the unelected military regime to change the official name of the country. Internationally, both names are recognised.”
It’s general practice at the BBC to refer to the country as Burma, and the BBC News website says this is because most of its audience is familiar with that name rather than Myanmar. The same goes for Rangoon, people in general are more familiar with this name than Yangon.’

Talking about the readerouters- I always get contrafibularitied by their curious diction; up and down the register, pauses where there shouldn’t be pauses, no pauses where there should be, and strange ideas of what words should be stressed.

Talking of Americanisms, the one that really drives me up the wall is “train station”. They are railway stations FFS!
I too feel strongly about ‘train station’ to the extent that I reprimanded the nurse who was saving my life when she used it in small talk.

I remember a news reader tripping up over this recently when he reported a story about a ‘railw err train station’. Clearly about to go off message and face the consequences.
It’s another example of how the arrogant BBC determines what we say and how we say it and how it sees itself on a mission to change the face of Britain.
Please excuse the pedantry but it never even used to be ‘railway station’ just ‘station’, as any other kind was a rarity. If it was of another kind then it had a descriptor added pertaining to its use e.g. ‘bus station’.
We’re now ‘customers’ instead of passengers.
Reporters seldom know the difference between a rock, which in the US can be ‘hurled’, and a stone, which in English can be picked up and thrown. If they were reporters, rather than readers of foreign press release, then they’d know (or find out ) the difference.
I used to spend a lot of time in the USA. I heard “depot” a lot and station but can’t remember hearing “Train station” .
In fact the railway/road terms in the US take some getting used to. Mostly very different. In a lot of cases they make more sense.
Ties instead of sleepers. Tower instead of signal box. The list is endless and extends into the really technical. I soon picked them up. As usual the Americans are not so good on our words.
Re BBC diction .Well said Uncle bup. There really is nothing to it and is their attempt to validate their jobs. Ironically they do a poor job of it.
I must admit I did enjoy the various BBC TV/Radio announcers attempting to get their mouths around “Simferopol” on Friday morning. Especially when they had to say it several times in the same report and the pronunciation evolved into more tortuous flailings as they progressed.
Just heard Bridget Kendal do a strange new pronunciation of ‘Sebastopol’, one you’d never have heard as the address of Eric Sykes n Hattie. Mind you I think Bridget is not your typical bbc news airhead and I bet she gets pronunciations right.

The evidence of his own eyes may see cause for a moment of quite reflection. Or, maybe, just a sulk before coming back swinging. If so, maybe it happening back could see a change of heart? My experience is that who they are or not or made out to be can exercise the Flokkers often more than those who post on topic.
I do note that in this case there is a full point difference (and the next a number vs. letter swap). But as pah ably demonstrated, even such subtle tweaks are really not necessary for those determined to poison the well with malign intent.
Hence a better system does seem well worth looking at.

UKIP stalwart Sean Howlett has launched a petition calling on Harriet Harman MP to resign following allegations of links to the Paedophile Information Exchange in the 1970s. The allegations relate to her time at the National Council for Civil Liberties, when PIE was affliliated to the body.
The petition reads: “After maintaining a wall of silence since the story broke about her former affiliation to the pro paedophile rights group – The Paedophile Information Exchange – Harriet Harman MP has finally come clean and said she regrets her former affiliation.
“In a Newsnight interview on the 24th February, Harriet Harman admitted that the Paedophile Information Exchange was affiliated to her former employer, the National Council for Civil Liberties. She has refused to admit that allowing PIE to affiliate was an error of judgement. She has also shown no contrition for the error, and has refused to apologise.
“We the undersigned believe that this demonstrates a complete lack of judgement in such a crucial area of children’s welfare, and that she therefore should immediately resign from Parliament.”

BBC radio Devon banging on about the cuts (BBC Radio Devon’s most used word since the coalition took power) and not a mention of the E.U. directive implemented by the labour party that the E.U. wanted the Somerset levels and other wet lands to revert back to their natural state. Apparently some film called 12 years a slave won best picture at the Oscars. Anyone heard of it? BBc dragging in another Ukrainian, not living there, to tell us how terrible things are. Back to the good old one side of the story interviews. Is my memory wrong but were the BBc not happy for our armed forces to intervene in Libya. Were they also not falling over themselves for military action in Syria right up to the point the public made it clear they were opposed to it.

Bono is a decent guy with a shrewd business brain, a bit like Bob Geldof. Neither are to blame for some of the fawning celebrity seeking hacks they attract.
Speaking of the Oscars (and without going into the merits of the awards or the winners as I haven’t really seen any of them this year apart from The Wolf of Wall Street) I might be reading far too much into this but given the BBC’s often snide and subtle way of pushing its agendas it’s worth pointing out.
As well as their obvious fawning over 12 Years a Slave (again, haven’t seen it so I won’t judge the film itself which is probably pretty good) since it pushes their recent race-baiting with Sol Campbell and Vincent Tan both playing the race card over the weekend, there were some things in there that seemed to be deliberately undermining the male acting winners.
For a start, Cate Blanchett winning the Best Actress award was listed above Matthew McConaughey winning Best Actor. Usually it would be the other way around, and McConaughey’s award was considered the more competitive whereas Blanchett was such a nailed-on winner that some bookmakers were refusing to take any more bets on it, so you’d think his award would be of more interest. But that in itself isn’t evidence of anything. The article also goes into depth about Lupita Nyong’o winning the supporting actress award before detailing any of the other ones, which the cynic in me would love to call bias, but in reality it’s logical to go straight from a quote from the Best Picture winner’s producer to that of one of its actors who won an award, so again I don’t think there’s anything to it. The fact there’s any doubt at all though is just evidence of how much distrust there is in any of the BBC’s journalism these days.
What was worrying was the way they portrayed McConaughey himself, first by pointing out that he’s “formerly a rom-com regular whose roles centred on his good looks” which came across to me as a way of saying he wasn’t already considered a credible actor even though he’s been in loads of serious drama for the last several years and has been critically acclaimed in most of them. Blanchett herself has been in a few romantic comedies and isn’t exactly unattractive herself, and the same has gone for a lot of award-winning actors over the years, so I don’t get why it’s worthy of mentioning as far as McConaughy’s concerned. To be fair, the article then explains that he lost a lot of weight for the role, so maybe they were just making the most that he had to risk his looks for the part, but that goes for a lot of actors over the years like Christian Bale, Robert De Niro and Charlize Theron. So I might be looking at it incorrectly but to me it seemed like a sneering way of saying McConaughy only won the award because he was in the right place at the right time.
Also, they then had a big quote from him in which he thanked God and said that it was only God responsible for his success and no human hand was involved. Given the BBC’s regular stance that Christians are backwards idiots (while Islam is the religion of progression and enlightenment…*eyeroll*) it seemed to me that this quote was given such prominence as another way of making McConaughy look like a moron. Sure, he actually said it, fine. I don’t agree with it personally because I’m not religious, and I think it’s unfair to the many people who HAVE helped him become what he is, not to mention his own efforts. But this isn’t all he said and I doubt it could even be considered the most prominent comment he made, so I don’t know why it would be seen as being so worthy of selection unless the BBC is pushing his religion onto us for a very direct and deliberate reason.
Finally, when it quotes Jared Leto it ends with “whose last film was six years ago.” A fairly innocuous comment, albeit an incorrect one (his last acting role before Dallas Buyers Club was actually in 2009, and he’s directed a documentary film since then so I don’t know where they got six years from. Maybe they meant from when it was shot, but it should have gone by release date. Besides which, it was shot in 2007 so it would STILL be wrong to say six years) but again, given the BBC’s way of subtly dissing people it wouldn’t surprise me if the inference was that he wasn’t a real actor, or was only a part-time one, and that he was also undeserving and profited purely from choosing the right role.
One last note – the News at Ten report featured a black presenter talking to a black reporter on the red carpet talking about 12 Years a Slave, which is of course a film about slavery. If this had been on any other news broadcast (aside perhaps from Channel 4) I’d not even have noticed, but again, because this is the BBC and we’ve seen repeatedly just how much it wants to push its liberalism down people’s throats, I can’t just write it off as a simple coincidence even though both are completely credible journalists who frankly deserve better than to be a pawn in the BBC’s political game.
It’s quite possible that all of this is me just EXPECTING the BBC to be partisan and biased due to all of the examples where it’s actually true, but the fact these things are even considered possible let alone feasible is just another indictment of how the majority of the BBC’s ‘news’ has become ‘views’ that need to be treated with suspicion and scrutiny. Often, that suspicion and scrutiny is unfounded, and often, it turns out to be totally accurate and later corroborated by repeat evidence or inside sources confirming their true intentions. And besides which, the BBC itself has shown itself ready and willing over the years to infer its prejudices onto everyone else – as shown by the aforementioned attempts at validating the ridiculous assertions made by Sol Campbell and Vincent Tan in the last few days. And the BBC is funded by me, you, and almost everyone in this country to spew this drivel, whereas I can and will be readily mocked and ignored at no expense to the UK taxpayer if I’m incorrect, which I acknowledge that I might be on this occasion – something the BBC never does about its own output.
The bBBC keeps showing the line from McQueens’ acceptance speech about dedicating his award to the 21 million people who are still in slavery today. So, who are they, and who are their slave-masters?

There’s a subtle point that no broadcaster has understood (and it’s something the BBC would not discuss even if astute enough to see it) and that’s the tribalism in Ukraine negates the concept behind the EU. The EU was created so that, long-term, any notions of national allegiance would be suppressed.
What we are seeing in Ukraine is what happens when you simply substitute one allegiance of state with another. Some Ukrainians have entered violent protests with others because they want to be integrated in the EU.
In simple terms: for the few people who adore the EU there is still a tendency to adopt a tribal attitude.
By Jove, in recent days I’ve been some what amused by the British Broadcasting Corporation’s televisual news bulletins on the subject of the Ukraine. I almost dropped my pipe!
To my mind this bally continental european union association has helped stir up a mare’s nest in the far off town of Kiev – small wonder that the Russian bear feels sorely aggrieved.

Totally off topic, but I would advise everyone to fix their gas & electricity prices for as long a time as possible. Tony BLiars policy of wrecking the electricity generation of the UK closing coal fired stations and switching to insufficient gas fired plants means we are also at risk of the lights going out if the supply is interrupted.
Now Hague and Cameron’s posturing, puffing out their little chests whilst forgetting the people and the issues back home is almost certain to lead to utility prices to skyrocket.
Although the coal fired stations have not been demolished and could be brought back on line, it will take time, and the prices of coal supplies will have also risen because of the gas price.
Who can say how long this crisis will last, and even if it is resolved, whether there will be another? This is the age old example of not putting all your eggs in one basket – but then it’s another example of stupidity brought about by following ‘green’ pressure.
Even HIGNFY cartoonists saw this coming in the title cartoon where a Russian soldier turns off the gas supply and the lights of Europe go out.

A third of Europe’s and our gas comes from Russia. Even worse about 90% of coal used to generate electricity is imported now, the majority comes from Russia. Global Warming may be our only savour if, as you say, Putin tells one of his corporals to, “поверните кран, мальчика” (turn that tap off lad). Global Warming might yet be a blessed relief, if only it were not a myth.
This trouble in the Ukraine was stirred up by Ashton, another appointee, to the EU cabal now running our country and Kerry of the US, (Barry was playing Golf at the time). They are now quick to condemn Putin for his benign take over (so far) in the Crimea but conveniently forget about Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia and Libya and………

If BBC ‘journalists’ actually did any genuine reporting on the Israeli-Arab conflict they might notice that Hamas and company use cement and steel not only for bunkers and rocket launchers but also for terrorist tunnels into Israel (and Egypt). And if there were any genuine journalists among that rotten BBC Middle East crew, they would not represent Hamas’ military build up as an Israeli fear but as verifiable fact.

So the Oscars are over and ’12 Years’ will hopefully drop out of the BBC news coverage. However, I fear another ‘Oscar’ is about to take over our newswaves. There are obvious signs the our beloved Beeb is about to embark on one of their pattern bombing exercises with the Pistorius trial. The reporter this morning seemed very happy that the trial. which is scheduled to last a month may take up to three times that. God help us!

I have been wondering why and when personal attribution & responsibility are such seemingly essential aspects of the news reporting experience, yet the BBC so often offers, and is allowed to get away with fielding substitutes and/or anonymous spokespersons.
Tone makes a ivorytower-strewn speech, and when questions fly gets it explained away not by him but a waffling drone issuing a ‘case closed’ statement of what the boss actually meant.
A BBC celeb strays form the straight and fiscally unhypocritical, and another nameless drone makes the excuses.
A reporter or editor is shown to be totally unprofessional, inaccurate or lacking in objectivity or integrity… and a drone is wheeled out to explain they actually got it perfectly right. No further questions allowed.
This is not how the BBC treats those it sees requiring being held to account. It likes the top banana, on record, in their gaff, subject to interrogation and no backsies if things get enhanced in the edit suite afterwards, as there was no time or space for the truth.
It all seems so counter-productive too.
There are, mostly, some good, honest, dedicated reporters at the BBC, I am sure… would hope… maybe….
But such individuals are tainted immediately by the BBC, via its own paranoid, dark hand, reducing almost all reference to a myriad personal deeds and words as being from ‘the BBC’.
Maybe there is a perception of safety in numbers and protection of the hive to this.
But surely it must rankle with those who are proud of their abilities and standards, to be so easily tarnished by being associated with the bad via some un-named representative of all speaking on their behalf?
I see ‘a BBC spokeswo/man (BS) says…’ and it is pretty much certain they are in the doo-doo again and bunkering down. What’s odd is this conceit is so often permitted by other media, when the more damning ‘so and so refused to comment’ would be more accurate. And a technique the BBC is not shy of using either.

BTW There is no such thing as Occupied Palestinian Territory. There are still thousands( if not millions) of people who I feel watch TV as something to do and would not think of using a computer or iplayer to select programmes they really want to watch . Lots of people ( does anyone know how many ?) have 4 or 5 channels only and that is why the BBC is so powerful.
It isn’t technically possible for anyone to have ‘4 or 5 channels only’. Whether they use satellite, terrestrial, or cable, if they can get any channels at all they will get considerably more than five.

I have loads of experience in this area, and I can tell everyone that not a single unmarried mother I came across wanted a job, and all were very happy with the very generous benefits their status attracted.
The problem is of course the punitive inhuman amount paid to people who are genuinely looking for a job, and the massive difference paid to those who choose to opt out of work.
It does not cost 4 times as much to raise a baby than it does to maintain an adult!
The solution is to pay more to adults looking for work and less to scroungers.

I’m on Russia’s side in this. I see the EU and the USA attempting to extend their Empires into the East. Putin is attempting to defend his cultural and political interests which extend beyond Russia. And he is also defending people who are devoutly Christian. It is a by-product but he has defended the West at the same time by keeping the Islamic expansion at bay in his sphere. These intellectual musings on the BBC’s funding models often intrigue. The simple fact seems to be they want as much as they can get, for as long as they can get it, no backsies or accounting.
However a few realities are starting to dawn, and so they are adopting the negotiating stance of Souk trader, pitching a ridiculous high price (sub on iPlayer; unique funding maintained on the rest) in hope of being driven ‘back’ to where they have been all along.
What doesn’t seem to have sunk is that when precedents get set in one area, it’s harder to refuse them in others.
As it stands the BBC’s 20,000 staff (and apparent breeding colonies of £150k+ a year managers) will soon be supported by about a hundred Graun readers each getting charged £50m pa for their licence fees.
