Obama to win 2010 Boston Marathon!
BOSTON – President Barack Obama won the 2010 Boston Marathon this morning in a stunning decision designed to encourage him to quit smoking and keep running to stay in shape. The Boston Athletic Association announced their decision to name Obama the winner even though the race will not be run until 18 April 2010 because the president has the desire to win and has good intentions.
In announcing Obama the winner the president of the Boston Athletic Association said, “We must rise above the out dated measurements of what a person actually has accomplished and focus instead on their intentions and what they say they will do. “Intentions and talk are what drive the world.” Congressman Barney Frank and Chinese Vice President XI Jinping seated nearby reiterated these words.
The Boston Athletic Association also noted that no president has won the marathon before. This would set a good example for all future presidents of the United States and for other countries such as Iran and North Korea that intentions really matter.
Many observers were shocked by the unexpected decision before the race has even been run.. However, when told of his win the President said he had really been thinking a lot about keeping in shape, talked with staff about cutting back on his smoking, and even read an article about the Boston Marathon.
Obama added that wining the Boston Marathon was better than any other award he has received including his Nobel Prize, Tony for best performance by leading actor, Emmy for outstanding lead actor in drama series, Golden Globe for best performance of an actor in a comedy, Heisman Trophy for side stepping the issues, NASCAR Champion, World Series Most Valuable Player, Best Twitter Page, and America’s Best Teleprompter Reader Award.

Woman killer flees on shop visit
A woman convicted of murder has gone on the run during an escorted visit to the shops in south London.
Patricia Gillette, 41, from Streatham, south London, was detained indefinitely in 2007 for killing Mark Murphy, 38, at his home in Streatham in August 2006. Gillette, who was being held at Bethlem Royal Hospital, was on a visit to shops in West Wickham High Street, Bromley, when she escaped on Friday afternoon.
Police described her as “dangerous” and warned people not to
approach her.
Gillette is of large build, has moles under both eyes, a scar on the left side of her neck and another scar on her left ear, police said.
She was last seen wearing a red hooded coat, a blue jeans shirt, black jogging bottoms and black shoes.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers had been advised that Gillette is overweight, weighing approximately 25 stone, and is 5ft 5in.

For all I know this piece is accurate but it does fall neatly into the BBC narrative. The message, we shouldn’t be afraid because Muslim intentions are benign.

The correct decision woud have been to send them to a military tribunal – Congress has already added plenty of safeguards for defendants.

I have said before on this blog that the failure of the Bush administration to define the Guantomo prisoners as either criminals or POWs (or a new status as yet unknown) would come back and bite them – and it has.
A military tribunal would have the following disadvantages:
a/ Defining al Qaida as soldiers would be a major propaganda victory for the terrorists.
b/ Simple Prisoners of War are almost never tried because killing people is what a soldier does. To justify a trial the Act of War must be defined as a war crime and that usually is only for high officers. I think Guilliani, a man I greatly respect, was wrong here. If the pilots who bombed Pearl Harbour had been caught they never woulkd have been brought to trial.
c/ In the normal scheme of things POWs are released at the end of hostilities they are not executed. That would be a war crime.
d/ The military tribunal, we are told, will not admit evidence such as the (in all probability true) accusation that torture was used on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Before someone says he had it coming, think how we react when a soldier is captured and tortured.
I probably could go on. My point is that the decision is far from clear cut and maybe all answers are in some way wrong.

I wonder why the bBC leave out just who the Christians conquered Coroba from in which to plonk their garish, gothic cathedral. I mean would the bBC use the very same adjective for the Hagia Sophia in Turkey?
