THE JIHAD AGAINST STARKEY

I see that the BBC are leading the cultural Jihad from the Celtic Whinge against Dr David Starkey following his acerbic (but accurate) comments on Question Time the other night. My respect for Starkey deepens!

I thought it was very funny. Very un PC. It is true we English don’t really get that wound up about symbols of Englishness, although I do get annoyed when other patron saints days are rammed down our throats in England by the BBC.

Entirely predictable – and proving his point. The Scots and the Irish suffer from the delusion that their romantic past – written mostly in the c19th is real. Some points

    1) Scotland was a backward underdevloped unimportant nation on the periphery of civilisation
    2) Ditto Ireland
3)Petit nationalism is OK with the BBC (anyone who is anti British eh)

The whiners are beyond parody, can’t they see that they are substantiating the assertion?

I’m Scots-born and I found his comment very funny. Burns is highly overrated. Ma dear mither was wont to compare him to Shakespeare but I think she was a weeee bit biased.

But I still can’t stand David Starkey – a sour gay atheist whose face could curdle milk.

  8. David Preiser (USA) says:

Any bets the BBC went the extra mile to nail Starkey because of his anti-Brown/Labour humorous monologue (starting just before 1hr10 in) at Gabby Logan on Sunday? Logan actually apologized to the audience for it after the segment was over, promising “redress” later in the form of Kevin Maguire.

starkey is just a tetchy wee english poof spending his days dreaming of fellating henry 8 – perhaps one of our own proud scottish poofs will sort him out. scotland will not be feeble when it is independent.

I’m not bothered about him insulting the Scottish, however, I don’t agree with his reasoning for why England should not have a ‘National Day’.

Celebrating our ‘greatness’ does not diminish us. It would also give us another, much needed, bank holiday.

I do prefer Starkey’s historical programmes to those by the godawful Simon Schama though!

Basically, you can guarantee that anything that winds up the bbc (& ady) is a good thing… But I agree with libertus – really the guy’s only positive point is that he stands out as the single non-Guardianista who (VERY occasionally) gets the chance to give his opinion on the State Broadcaster

Fantastic piece by Starkey on five lied, he really got stuck into Labour and I could feel the sense of outrage among the BBC aparatchiks. It was funny also to hear number 10s propaganda unit texting in complaining about Starkey, they dont like it up them.

I thought the whole prog was great. Reasonable spread of panelists for a welcome change. Even Clare Fox! And no neck Denham trounced time after time? I note Dimblebore did ask Starkey to shut up though. Probably wetting his PC pants about dissing our Celtish brethen. Who cares? The audience loved him. And compared with the outrageous posturing queen Sharma, he was positively butch.

What is wrong with these people? Worse than Muslims? OK no one can be that thin skinned. We put up with the Bravehearteers for years banging on about William Wallace and those awful English, do our MPs get involved? Pathetic.

Just looked too. Lucky for the Scots collective nervous systems, that they dont have any place on the world stage, or they would have crumbled from the verbal attacks and snipings long ago. If a mild 30 second piss take folds them up.
Scottish “anti Zionists” always seem VERY prominent on various HYSs though.

In the clip cited by David Vance, (see the Celtic Whinge in the blog) the BBC Scotland reporter states as a fact “David Starkey has got the reputation as the rudest man in Britain” Really? What proof is there for that?

By the way – the USA is weighed down by kilts, sporrans, bagpipes and lots of made-up Celtic stuff. The English tend to be more modest about parading their heritage (worse luck). And we’re outnumbered. There are more Scots living abroad than in Scotland. Anyone know why that is? David Starkey may have an answer.

Surely the point is that the BBC and anyone else for that matter can go on and on about the English being xenophobic whenever they like. No headlines in the papers or being paraded on the BBC. No “hurt” English voice slaging off someone for doing so. Yet if anyone dares to insult the Scottish nationalists or the Weslh or Irish then thats a different matter. Why can’t these people just grow up – do they feel that inferior that they cannot take being critisized? And why is it in the news anyway? Its trivial nonsense.

After all we have a government in Britain that is much more aggresive towards the English – and these people can make a difference to us – David Starkey has no power to do anything.

“Cross-party politicians have warned of growing English nationalism following devolution, airing their views in a BBC programme.

Home Secretary Jack Straw says the English had used their “propensity to violence to subjugate Ireland, Wales and Scotland” on the Radio 4 programme Brits. The broadcast is examining what it now means to be British.

Mr Straw will describe the English as “potentially very aggressive, very violent” and will “increasingly articulate their Englishness following devolution.”

As a resident of Scotland I fully applaud David Starkey’s remarks. Scotland is a country with absolutely no real pride in itself. It well sell itself to anyone who is not English. A rich American wants to build a golf course on a SSSI and he gets permission from Salmond for the golf course and hundreds of houses, thus destroying the entire SSSI. It has a government which has reneged on all its electoral promises and whose only guiding principle is that it is anti-English, despite the fact that it is English money that keeps it afloat. Also, without English enterprise, most of its tourist infrastructure would vanish. You may ask why I stay here, Simply because house prices have so fallen behind those in England and Wales I can’t afford to move!!

I sometimes wonder if Scottish Nationalism is really about independance or is it just anti-English?

How can a true Scot Nat want to sever ties with England when they insist on subsidies from them Do they not want to stand on their own?

Or is it the lets blame Englands past and claim compensation.

I used to work with a Scot and he was forever going on about battles fought between the English and Scots that had been over for 200 years and how the poor Scots were treated by the English. He didn’t seem to understand that the Scots were not just an inocent party. What about Charles Edward Stuart and the Jacobite army which got as far as Derby – did he think they just got on a train from Edinburgh? What about the battle of Nevilles Cross – they got as far as Durham – did they not get there by force or did they come by boat up the river Wear. What about James IV – he was also James I of England etc etc.
Its just playing the victim card, because that is how some are brought up.

For my part the Scots are welcome to independance as long as there is also an English Parliament. If that happened, in one fell swoop we would lose most of New Labour.

Just the Beeb at its usual self advertising escapades…cause a stink and get itself talked about. Next thing we know is STarkey will go on “Who do you think you are ” and discover his ancestors were Scots. The USA needs Canada to define itself as that place that is not Canada and England needs Scotland to define itself as the place that is not Scotland and it was good of Old MacStarkey to recognise that fact.

woooah – back up a minute. You have heard of Adam Smith and “The Wealth of Nations”?

if anything, you could argue that Scotland was one of the premier driving forces behind the development of global capitalism, especially in America.

in fact , you could make a valid case explaining how socialism has pushed Scotland to its current position of being on the periphery. but in the 18th/19th centuries , it certainly wasn’t.
