DON’T MENTION THE WAR!

The BBC casually reports that a “Gaza rocket hits south Israel.” Oh really? Isn’t that a wonderfully innocuous way of revealing that Hamas is still trying to murder those pesky Jews, even during a so-called “cease-fire” (Hudna). The BBC is quick to add that both sides have “violated” the cease-fires, so suggesting an equivalence where none such exists. Hamas has shown bad faith, as one might expect, and is still enthusiastically targeting innocent Israeli people and when Israel dares to respond to this it is then declared to be as bad as Hamas.

They are still not fired by ‘Gaza’.

Fair point, but the BBC could save itself a helluvah lot of trouble by simply using the word “terrorist.” After all, the Gazans have been terrorising southern Israel for years now with rockets so why not call a spade a spade?

Though the headline is a bit wishy-washy

    Gaza rocket hits southern Israel

as if a firecracker went off without human intervention and sort of accidentally landed in Israel, it’s still a fair article and quite astonishing for the BBC. I guess that’s why it’s nameless.

Though the article includes the obligatory disparity in the death tolls, the BBC generally doesn’t admit this:

The ceasefires ended Israel’s three-week offensive in Gaza, which was aimed at stopping rocket attacks on Israel.

Note the lack of the obligatory …which Israel says

    Or this:

The ceasefires, independently declared by each side, have been violated several times.

An Israeli soldier was killed in a bomb attack on the Gaza border on Tuesday. Israel responded with air raids and a brief ground incursion by soldiers and tanks.

The BBC getting the sequence of events right – never thought I’d see the day.

    Or this:

He has no plans to meet leaders of Hamas, which Israel, the US and the European Union consider a terrorist group.

The BBC often restricts that observation to the US and Israel and doesn’t mention the EU.

Goodness, are people high up at the BBC kicking the butts of anti-Semitic staff and could change be around the corner? Certainly looks like it.

How long does it take for the BBC to put up the news of Hamas’s latest rocket strike? or are they carefully considering the wording or waiting for an Israeli retailation which they can use in the headline and story.

I have a copy of the unpublised news headline here:

“Gaza crisis erupts after Israel hits back.”

    BBC are just waiting.

I wasn’t following the BBC coverage yesterday but you make fair points.

Still, it really does look as if the BBC is making some effort to be even-handed here – even though, as we know, there is no equivalence between terror groups and Israel.

Today their main story is the hitting of a hospital in Sri Lanka. They are almost giving it as much emphasis as Gaza. People have complained that the BBC hasn’t been wringing its hands over the state of civilians in Sri Lanka. See comment no. 718 and the BBC response at no. 720. 719 is also interesting:

Yes, but then doesn’t this imply that all Gazans share collective responsibility for the rockets?

The BBC still have the problem with Sri Lanka, that neither of the protagonists are Muslim,Jews or Christians so the BBC can’t know which side to take and , therefore, generally , prefer not to report it.
