WHAT’S AN INVASION BETWEEN FRIENDS?

As has been pointed out, Russia has just invaded Georgia with 150 tanks rolling across the border. Sky has it as the lead story – the BBC has the Olympic opening ceremony as its lead story. World class broadcasting, eh? If you want news, best avoid the Olympic broadcaster. Clearly given the HUGE investment that the BBC has made with OUR money, viewers are going to have the Olympics shoved down their throat, like it or not, invasions or otherwise.

I think the BBC headline was somethin like Russian tanks ‘enter’….

Really? Sound very friendly according to the BBC.

So no ethnic cleansing taking place then?…

Delight on BBC News Channel on what they perceive to be the US’s impotance over Russia/Georgia after talking big about freedom for former Soviet lands since 1990.

That’s assuming the Bush administration even knows about the region, the BBC Washington said scornfully that the White House folk would be raching for their atlases. Perhaps it is the BBC who are ignorant. Aftr all with the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline carrying 1% of the world’s oil through Georgia – Bush is credited with knowing about oil (or at least being manipulated by oilmen).

We have a few UK Servicemen there, serving in the UN Mission to Georgia. There are around 150 UN personnel on that Mission, and if anything happens to them, things could get nasty.

What am I saying – the Russians will of course veto any UN comment or condemnation of their behaviour. I wonder how will the BBC report that, then? Something along the lines of “useless and impotent UN fails once more” would seem to be in order – but I won’t hold my breath…..

I don’t think the two timing of the two events is at all coincidental. It’s hard to believe the Russians didn’t take the worldwide focus on the Olympics into account when planning this operation. And as one would expect the BBC is dutifully following the script.

I keep guessing that – unless it’s the US or Israel – Al Beeb’s headlines are written locally (i.e. by the Russians). Pretty much sounds like.

Or as the Newsnight blog puts it, this “entry” is a mere “allegation” from the Georgian president.

“There has been fighting overnight, and allegations by the Georgian President that 150 Russian tanks and other vehicles have entered South Ossetia.”
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/newsnight/fromthewebteam/2008/08/friday_8_august_2008.html

How dare the Georgian president make such slurs against Russia! Thankfully we have the impartial BBC to put things right and tell us the truth about what’s really going on. 😆

    Peter,
“this is EU business now” by that I suppose you mean how the EU can sell out Georgia, leave her swinging in the wind and appeasing Russia? If Georgia needs a flashy millitary parade complete with flashy uniforms and bands then the EU ‘army’ is ready BUT if Georgia needs real allies then ‘team America(world police)’ is their only hope! I can see the chief comrade reptile Barroso working out how he can sell Georgia down the swanee right now!

    Unbelievable.

Georgia never had nuclear weapons. And its armed forces are really pathetically small (it’s got something like 7 operational combat aircraft). Russia may not be the relative superpower it used to be, but unless Georgia has got an Ace in the hole, going up against Russia looks like an act of suicide.

newsnight are now back onto the bloody olympics….

jesus h christ.. there’s a SERIOUS regional conflict in the Caucasus right now, that has serious ramifications for all of us.

its basically a fight over oil pipeline routes… route via georgia ,turkey, israel , and you’ll be independent of Putin.

but Putin wants those central asia pipes feeding into the Russian system..

this is big big stuff… which could escalate into something seriously nasty..

    Wheres the Jonah&Millibland?

Just a note to explain Russian intentions.

The Georgian region of S/O is a strategic wedge into the soft underbelly of Georgia and a perfect staging platform to threaten the non Russian energy highway! Russia couldnt give two s***ts about the natives and would happily kill them all if they got in the way. The FSB(KGB/NKVD) run the enclave with a rod of iron and anyone who doesnt tow the line dissapears!
Russia will not stop if it gets away with this little game, there are plenty of other places that the FSB has its eyes on!
Russia wants the monopoly on energy to further its geopolitical aims and Georgia is the fly in the ointment because it controls an independent supply route.
Geogia was egged on by the EU and supported by the USA, the EU wanted a supply route that couldnt be used a weapon by Russia but the EU will not spill the blood of one EU ‘soldier’ they would stand back and watch Georgia smashed to pieces rather than act.
As usual the EU rely on the USA to back them up and protect EU interests while critisising and undermining the USA.
The BBC and the EU are perfect bedfellows, both are venal, selfish, cowardly and self regarding scum!

  47. Cassandra says:

    Just a further note, sorry!

The EU cowards Brown,Merkal,Sarkozy,Barroso are as we speak stabbing Georgia in the back after encouraging them to set up a competing energy supply route!
