MORE GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISM

.

Each day, the sun rises anew and each day the BBC spews out more tales of global warming alarmism. I am sure this must have an impact on views held by the general population – which is all part of the alarmists agenda in the first place, propaganda before science, eco-faith before fact-based certainty. Today the BBC breathlessly tells us that the Arctic sea ice is melting even faster than last year, despite a cold winter. An ice free Arctic by 2013 is posited as is the prospect of a global 22ft increase in sea level, should the Pole melt. I’m sorry but this is pure eco-wackery, it’s The Day after Tomorrow on the license fee . There is NO serious climate scientists suggesting a 22ft increase in global sea level and in fact the UN, not itself an independent player on this issue, suggests that sea levels on average will rise by 34.5cms during the next century. (In itself the sea level has risen by 29cms since 1850) Using apocalyptic imagery – such as a total Polar melt – plays well to the media and this is what this is all about. There is no mention of the thickening in the Antarctic sea ice though presumably that would not suit the BBC narrative. There is also no settled science on this issue, For example a study published in Geophysical Research Letters (Winsor, P., “Arctic sea ice thickness remained constant during the 1990s,” Volume 28: 1039-1041 (2001)) found the same to be true in the Arctic. The study concluded, “mean ice thickness has remained on a near-constant level around the North Pole from 1986-1997.” Moreover, the study noted data from six different submarine cruises under the Arctic sea ice showed little variability and a “slight increasing trend” in the 1990s. Since the current warming phase ended back in 1998, what would drive the loss in sea ice area that the BBC reports on since that date? Climate is a huge issue and there is room for many opinions. My problem with the BBC is that it only allows one as this new story shows and that is pure green tinged bias.

So now it’s increased to 22ft. Why not just round it up to 100?

Besides, anyone with O level physics knows that when floating ice melts, the water level remains unchanged. That takes Arctic ice out of the equation.

Very clever to choose a graph that looks at first glance like everything is going down the gurgler.

Then you look at the axes and realise that it shows ice melts every summer. Doh.

Iain, that was the first thing that occurred to me. However looking at the article, they are referring to the ice on Greenland being capable of raising sea levels by 22 feet, which I must accept to be true.

I’m not sure that the scientists being quoted are referring to the Greenland ice sheet, but probably only the Arctic sea ice. The article does not make it clear, possibly deliberately.

    YE OLDE BBC NEWSFLASH

Ye BBC has just received into its possession secret government documents found abandoned on a seat on the Mail Coach from London to Dover, pertaining to possibly the end of the world.

“It will without doubt have come to your Lordship’s knowledge that a considerable change of climate, inexplicable at present to us, must have taken place in the Circumpolar Regions, by which the severity of the cold that has for centuries past enclosed the seas in the high northern latitudes in an impenetrable barrier of ice has been during the last two years, greatly abated.

(This) affords ample proof that new sources of warmth have been opened and give us leave to hope that the Arctic Seas may at this time be more accessible than they have been for centuries past, and that discoveries may now be made in them not only interesting to the advancement of science but also to the future intercourse of mankind and the commerce of distant nations.”

There is something extremely unpleasant at work here. The ‘Greens’ poll below the BNP in the UK and, for all the waffle of the three main parties, it is hard to find much support for eco-wackery outside the ranks of tofu munchers and yoghurt spinners.

And yet it appears an edict has gone out commanding every BBC news or current affairs programme, whether on radio or TV, to have at least one ‘Green’ item. The BBC simply will not shut up about it. As a consequence, watching or listening to the BBC is like being stuck in an old-fashioned railway carriage with a foaming evangelist who refuses to leave you in peace. After two miles all you want to do is hurl him out of the window.

The result of this ceaseless, hectoring propaganda is that when you ask a politician why she or he doesn’t seem interested in talking about anything else, or why they refuse to show some backbone in the face of the mounting tsunami of ‘Green’ lunacy emanating from Brussels, they look you in the eye and solemnly swear that ‘ people are really concerned about ‘Green’ issues’.

No they are not. There is a vague consensus that we are better for having clean seas and rivers, that our streets shouldn’t be ankle deep in filth and that some recycling might be a good idea.

But there is nothing to suggest that the levels of obsession pouring out the BBC and the political classes is much more than a burden being heaped on the average family to placate a popular obsessive delusion, spread like a contagious disease among people with nothing better to occupy their minds.

It’s a con-trick. And the BBC are up to their necks in it.

Before anybody answers, go into the kitchen and get a glass of water. Place a few ice cubes in it. Mark the water level on the glass and wait. Once the ice melts, look and see how far the water level has risen. Then think about this issue again.

The extremely unleasant bit would be typified by the way that Marxists have started to infiltrate the environmental lobby groups. Fact is that “environmentalism” is the brand spanking new way of attacking the prevailing culture. It doesn’t matter if its true. It doesn’t matter if the left have anything better to replace it with. It only matters that they have a big new stick to beat the prevailing culture with.

Thing is, the big stick is likely to be used by the public to beat the BBC with when we have yet another cold wet summer and the economy is in the toilet courtesy of Brown. Beeboid cultural Marxists are far too dim to see that far ahead.

Don’t forget there are 6 billion people on the planet all expelling CO2 when they breathe out.

We need to start reducing this immediately.

First… we need to impose a sedentary lifestyle. The more you exercise the more you breath in oxygen and the more you expel CO2.

Darfur and natural disasters. Let them die. Think of the CO2 reduction we can achieve by this carbon offset.

And so on. It’s the Soylent Green of the Carbon Dioxide offsets.

Al Gore is already setting up a firm to trade.

    This UK Labour government:
“is firmly committed to increasing renewable energy use, as an integral part of our wider strategy to tackle climate change…”*

So, on this very questionable premise, the UK people are being further pressured into a unilaterally high carbon tax economy, supported by evangelical ‘Greens’ and their ilk.

    The UK Labour government has:-
“played a key role in securing agreement among European Union Heads of Government in 2007 to a binding target of 20% of EU’s energy (electricity, heat and transport) to come from renewable sources by 2020, as set out in the Spring European Council conclusions. (Full details can be found on the European Commission: Spring European Council Conclusions on Tackling Climate Change webpage).”*

    http://www.berr.gov.uk/energy/sources/renewables/strategy/page43356.html

The BBC in its report of a committee of MPs makes no critical assessment of the presumptions about climate change; and, for example, uncritically quotes, the Carbon Trust, without explaining that the Carbon Trust is that oxymoron ‘a government-funded independent company’:

    “UK renewables policy ‘inadequate'”

You are about 20 years out of date there. The Green party stopped been ‘green’ with the introduction of the ‘socialist greens’ in 1988.

Never see a ‘Nuclear Power Nein Danke’ sticker? Soviet funded propaganda.

I’m quite happy for the BNP to stay off our screens BTW. Having said that a more thorough investigation of their philosophy would be fun. Cartoon villains are so passe don’t you think?

As for sea levels rising that only applies to land ice. As correctly stated sea ice makes little, not no, little difference. Land ice is a different kettle of fish. But as the last major survey only looked at around 38% of glaciers and only found 11% to be melting I wouldn’t worry about it just yet.

Oh and the UK will get colder under the current mythology as the melting ice switches off the Atlantic Conveyor.

Ah the joys of a mutable philosophy.

So, if this cooling continues and the green lunatics force carbon rationing on us,prepare to be very cold.Of course rioting in the streets does tend to warm you up,providing you have enough food to keep moving.

The BBC believes it has a right to pollute the planet to bring us its great words of wisdom (what we refer to at utter bollocks) and that its the great unwashed non liberals that should be forced to give up their cars and flying (what’s wrong with two weeks in Skegness say the rich beeboids who fly off to Goa for some good drug taking time)

Of course many beeboids get BBC cars to take them to and from work, so they can smugly come on the BBC and say they don’t drive in London.

Certainly, after all the BNP only talks about not liking “foreigners”, whereas the current government actually goes out of its way to find real foreigners it can shoot. Perhaps we don’t need to look to closely at the BNP after all – the real villains are right in front of us with the Labour Party pointing at the BNP at shouting “Look over there!” while swiftly bumping off 250,000 people and adding Dr David Kelly to the list to top it off nicely. Don’t be tempted to be sucked in by their Gramscian mis-direction ploy, NuLabour are the real danger.

    Good question David.

But based on a false assumption.

Global average temperatures may have plateaued over the past decade. But not Arctic temperatures, which have continued to rise. Add to that warmer water melting/thinning ice from below – and there’s your answer.

    Polaris,

Where did you find that data, from the church of AGW? Global average temperatures have fallen and fallen sharply over the last 8-9yrs! AWTs plateaued 10yrs ago then fell sharply.
Average Global ocean temperatures are falling NOT rising as the BBC tells us. Antartic/Arctic average temperatures are falling and winter lows are reaching record levels both North and South. The information you have is misleading because to show higher temperatures the authors have combined both summer and winter temperatures and added a positive value while working out the AVG when in reality the value weighting should have been negative!

Most people think it is up to the governments to stop the progress of climate change and global warming. In one hand they are correct but on the other hand it is up to ourselves to help the planet and our civilization. If we don’t do it singly then we will fail our future children and grandchildren who will have the unknown forced upon them. Governments and energy companies have started the ball rolling. We are seeing a large increase in renewable energy sources here in the UK. My local energy supplier has been taken over by a larger firm – SSE – who specialize in supplying cheap gas and electricity through hydro projects, cheaper cleaner and greener. If we all work as one we will be able to make a difference. The question is how much of a difference can we make.
