Here’s a serious question: what was the last thing that the bbc produced, by themselves and not by one of the supposed independent companies set up by their cronies to milk the TV tax, that comes close to the originality and enjoyability of any of the great TV series that are produced in the USA?
Just something which a lot of people (Including the bBC) have missed.
The film clip was taken in 1933.
Hitler didn’t become the fuhrer until 2nd August 1934, when Hindenburg died. The Nazis salute had no negative image at the time. Hitler was admired for getting Germany back on her feet at a time of the Great depression.
The night of the long knives (where Hitler turned against the SA and supplemented them with the SS happened between June 30 to July 2, 1934)
The remilitarization of the Rhineland happened in 1936
Kristallnacht didn’t transpire until 1938
The annexing of Austria into Germany (Anschluss) happened in 1938 as did the Sudetenland areas, this was followed by the occupation of Czechoslovakia in March 1939.
Not only was the Queen 7 in 1933, but Hitler was seen as a nice guy until the mid or late 30s.
I don’t think anyone, including his supporters, thought of him as a nice guy. His opponents thought of him as a figure of fun until he started to commit his atrocities. In Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Fascism he points out that most of Hitler’s leading supporters in the USA were left-wingers.
Other than that I agree with most of what you say.
In 1933, Hitler was admired because basically he had done no wrong . In 1933 Hitler wasn’t even in charge of Germany, Hindenburg was. In 1933 Hitler was admired for getting Germany back on her feet. which is why so many fascist parties sprung into existence around that time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fascist_movements#Germany_.281933.E2.80.931945.29
“Hitler didn’t become the fuhrer until 2nd August 1934”
Maybe, but he was chancellor from Jan 33 and was able to make his own laws from Mar 33 after the Enabling Act. All other political parties were banned from Jul 33.
“Maybe, but he was chancellor from Jan 33 and was able to make his own laws from Mar 33 after the Enabling Act. All other political parties were banned from Jul 33.”
But he didn’t have absolute power, that rested with Hindenberg who died in 1934.
Gentlemen, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Lets be honest here, The jews weren’t getting gassed in 1933, Poland was still free, as was France, The UK hadn’t started rearming, and the SA ruled the roost and not the SS and the Spanish civil war which opened the eyes of a lot of people to the Nazis was 3 years in the future.
It is both obscene and ridiculous to chastise people in retrospect for things they couldn’t possibly have foreseen.
Once the truth is known, however, the situation changes. The BBC should be very careful in this respect, given their reporting on such ‘characters’ as Mugabe, Guevara, Arafat, Savile….
The Sun is being absurd. The Queen was a child and presumably doing as she was told by her uncle.
That said Edward’s involvement with the Nazi regime is murky to say the least. I very much doubt whether the real truth of it will ever emerge now.
What do you expect from a newspaper owned by an (erstwhile Australian) Republican? Rupert Murdoch is no friend of the Royal Family, or of the U.K. for that matter.
I’m never sure how much Murdoch dictates the opinions of his various media outlets. Sky news, for example, seems to me even further Left than the BBC. Surely, if the old crocodile was really calling all the shots, it would be more like Fox?

Ah, Father Ted. How he’s missed.

Are there any Right Wing members of the BBC?
If so, can they show themselves, please?
Balance and impartiality is of course important.
