HARLEQUIN ALERT!

You couldn’t have listened to the BBC this morning without hearing the dire warnings concerning the predatory monster that is…..the Harlequin ladybird. The BBC had this in their head-lines and they then ran the above item on it. Wonder could they just chill out a little or is the heat and the tennis getting to them?

Haven't on principle listened to the Today item, but I in any case knew about the Harlequin, a non-native species which has arrived from the Far East, and which is voraciously eating our local varieties. They really are a bloody menace, and should be shot (or squashed) on sight.

The person interviewed states that they should not be squashed!! We need to understand their feelings, apparently. 😉

Did they point out that the spread of these ladybirds to Orkney was due to climate change? Since Orkney is now as warm as the Far East was 20 years ago.

What's good enough for the Cayman Islands…

    'Cranmer':
"British government imposes Christian constitution on the Cayman Islands"

    [Extract]:

"One is left wondering why such an overtly Christian constitution is deemed beneficial to Her Majesty’s Overseas Territories, while that which is being imposed upon the United Kingdom by this profoundly anti-Christian Labour government is rabidly ‘secular’ and increasingly intolerant of any expression of Christianity in the public realm."

This story is not as significant as ladybirds for the BBC.

David – you might find this a bit of a joke but wait til they eat every native insect in your neck of the woods.

Soz David, but this is the only thing on Toady that I actually gave a toss about and the only item of news. The Balls thing has taken on a life of its own – huzzah!

WV: caddesc – sounds like an insect

But what was the point of this exercise? The woman doesn't want you to kill them, so what are you supposed to do? Are you supposed to call up the CEH if you see one and they'll send a couple guys in white coats to bring it back to the lab?

Seems like a totally pointless segment other than to add a little more fear and concern to everyone's daily lives.
